FRESNO, Calif. — The South Dakota State softball team jumped out to an early lead and eventually matched its Division I program record for runs scored in a single game as the Jackrabbits defeated Fresno State, 20-8, on Thursday in six innings. The win came in both teams' season opener as part of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic at Margie Wright Diamond.Â

The Jackrabbits scored three runs apiece in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 9-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third. SDSU starting pitcher
Tori Kniesche breezed through the first two innings before giving up a three-run double in the third to Fresno State's Keahilele Mattson which made it a 9-3 score.Â
Â
South Dakota State added another three runs in the top of the fourth and looked to close the game out by run-rule in the fifth. However, the Bulldogs registered four runs in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 12-7 score going into the sixth.Â
Â
The Jacks put the game away by scoring eight runs in the top half of the sixth. Freshman
Akayla Barnard capped the inning with a two-run triple to boost SDSU to the squad's 20th run of the night. The 20 runs for the Jackrabbits ties their program record in their DI era set in a 20-0 win at South Dakota on April 2, 2022.
Â
Barnard pitched the fifth for SDSU and was relieved by fellow freshman
