MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State scored 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning and rolled to a 16-5 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
Â
The Wildcats improved to 10-6 overall, while SDSU dropped to 7-10 in its final game before the start of Summit League play.
Â
The Jackrabbits couldn't have asked for a better start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead four batters into the game on a Dawson Parry grand slam. Reece Anderson doubled to the right-field corner to open the frame and the bases were filled after a walk to Carter Sintek and Cael Frost was hit by a pitch.
Â
Parry then blasted a 1-1 offering from James Guyette over the left-field wall for his second grand slam of the season and seventh home run.
Â
K-State responded with three runs in the home half of the first inning, then sent 16 men to the plate in the fateful second inning to build a 14-4 lead. Chuck Ingram led off the game for the Wildcats with a home run off SDSU starter Jack Kruger and added a two-run triple an inning later.
Â
Brady Day also plated two runs in the second inning with a bases-loaded walk and an RBI double, the latter of which capped the scoring in the frame. Kyan Lodice added a two-run single in the second and joined Ingram as Wildcats with three hits in the game.
Â
In all, Kansas State scored its 11 runs on six hits and were aided by a Jackrabbit error and six walks.
Â
Frost tallied what would be the final Jackrabbit run of the game in the third inning on a solo homer that was his team-leading eighth round-tripper of the season. The Jackrabbits' five hits were spread among five different players.
Â
After Kansas State's big second inning, Jackrabbit reliever Sam Schlecht put together two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and Brady Hawkins added a zero in the fifth inning. Dylan Driessen struck out both batters he faced to get out of a jam in the sixth. Arlen Peters tossed the final two innings for the Jackrabbits.
Â
Andrew Evans, who entered in relief after Parry's grand slam, worked 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
