For the second time in three weeks, South Dakota State swept the TicketSmarter Summit League baseball weekly awards March 18 with outfielder Cael Frost earning his second Peak Performer honor and right-hander Nic McCay receiving Peak Pitcher recognition.
Â
A junior from Gilbertville, Iowa, Frost extended his hitting streak to 18 games by hitting safely in all four games last week. He posted a .538 batting average (7-for-13) with two home runs, four runs batted in and eight runs scored. He hit a solo home run in a March 13 game at Kansas State and added a three-run shot in the middle game of a three-game sweep at Oral Roberts. Frost, who also received the award March 4, walked five times en route to a .700 on-base percentage for the week.
Â
McCay, a senior from Carlisle, Iowa, tied an SDSU single-game record during the Division I era of Jackrabbit baseball (since 2005) by recording 13 strikeouts in the March 15 series opener at Oral Roberts. He carried a shutout into the eighth inning before ending the game with one earned run allowed while scattering five hits and issuing a pair of walks.
Â
The first Jackrabbit pitcher to notch 13 K's in a Division I game was left-hander Brady Stover in a 2018 game against Fort Wayne.
South Dakota State, 10-10 overall, is scheduled to play Tuesday night at Creighton before resuming Summit League play with a weekend series at St. Thomas.
