BOSTON, Mass. – South Dakota State's
Zeke Mayo found his name on a prestigious list on Wednesday. The junior guard was selected as a finalist for the 2023-24 Lou Henson National Player of the Year award.
The award is presented annually to the top player in mid-major college basketball. The Lou Henson award honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who coached 775 games in 41 seasons.
Mayo is one 35 finalists for the award. Mayo has been previously honored this season as The Summit League's Player of the Year, a First Team All-Summit League selection and was named to The Summit League's All-Tournament Team. He was also picked to the First Team of the NABC All-District 12 Team on Tuesday.
The Lawrence, Kan., native helped lead the Jackrabbits to their second NCAA tournament appearance in three seasons. SDSU is set to play in its first-round game on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CT against Iowa State in Omaha, Neb. The game will be televised on truTV.
Mayo joins a recent Jackrabbit duo who were finalists for the award. Both Baylor Scheierman and Douglas Wilson were finalists in 2022.
The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. The 2024 award will be announced in Phoenix, Ariz., the site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship.
