Game Notes |
South Dakota State is back on the road and will play two ACC opponents in consecutive series. The Jackrabbits take on No. 3 Duke in Durham, North Carolina, in a doubleheader on Friday. SDSU follows that with a trip to Tallahassee to face No. 14 Florida State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 12.
Â
Saturday's originally scheduled game at Duke, which was to be part of a three-game series between the Jackrabbits and Blue Devils, has been canceled due to projected inclement weather.Â
Â
Duke will be a first-time opponent for the Jacks, while SDSU dropped two games to the Seminoles in 2010 by 12-0 and 6-0 scores. Duke is currently 16-1 this season with its lone loss in its season opener, a narrow 3-0 defeat to the three-time reigning national champions in Oklahoma. Florida State, last year's national runner-up, is 11-4 so far this year and will play in a Florida Gulf Coast-hosted tournament this weekend.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits are 11-12 overall this season behind one of the more difficult schedules at the Division I level. SDSU has played the 27th toughest schedule with all of its 23 games outside of its home state along with six games against nationally-ranked opponents.
Â
South Dakota State is coming off a 3-3 appearance at Arkansas' Wooo Pig Classic in Fayetteville. The Jackrabbits won two games over Southeast Missouri by run-rule scores. SDSU dropped both its matchups against Florida Atlantic.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits also faced host Arkansas, ranked as high as 15th last week, at Bogle Park twice. In the first meeting on Feb. 29, SDSU came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. The Razorbacks scored one run in the bottom of the frame and held the Jacks hitless the rest of the way to close out a 4-3 win.Â
Â
SDSU and Arkansas had their rematch on March 2. The Hogs took a 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run home run. The Jackrabbits wound up scoring the game's final seven runs. SDSU tied the score at 3-3 in the second. The fourth saw the Jackrabbits take their first lead, 4-3, on an RBI single by
Emma Osmundson. A two-run home run by
Lindsey Culver broke the game open in the same inning, then an RBI single by
Rozelyn Carrillo added insurance to the margin in the seventh. SDSU starting pitcher
Tori Kniesche limited the damage after the home run in the first. She pitched a complete-game for the Jackrabbits as SDSU earned a 7-3 victory over the Razorbacks. Â
Â
The win for SDSU was the program's second ever over a nationally-ranked opponent. The win over the 15th-ranked Razorbacks was higher than the program's first ranked win, a 5-2 decision in March of 2023 over No. 20 Baylor in Waco. The Jackrabbits are 2-26 all-time versus ranked foes.
Â
Familiar faces have been at the forefront of SDSU's success at the plate through 23 games. Senior outfielders
Emma Osmundson and
Lindsey Culver have led the way. Osmundson has team highs in batting average (.431), doubles (11), runs scored (20), hits (31), total bases (51) and slugging percentage (.708). Culver leads the Jacks in home runs (4) and RBIs (23), while she's hitting .394. Starting second baseman
Mia Jarecki is among SDSU's leaders in average (.377), home runs (3), runs (18), and triples (3). Â
