OMAHA, Neb. --
Cael Frost homered twice and
Nic McCay limited Omaha to one run over eight innings as South Dakota State opened a three-game Summit League baseball series with a 7-2 victory Friday night at Tal Anderson Field.
The Jackrabbits, who won their third game in a row, improved to 15-16 overall and 7-5 in league play. Omaha dropped to 8-22 overall and 6-7 in The Summit League.
After being held without a hit through the first three innings, the SDSU offense began to click in the fourth inning. With one out in the frame and the Jackrabbits trailing 1-0, Frost connected on an opposite-field solo shot to left field to tie the game. On the very next pitch from Omaha starter Charlie Bell,
Dawson Parry launched his 11th home run of the season over the wall in left field to give SDSU a lead it would not relinquish.
McCay allowed a run on two hits in the bottom of the first, then held the Mavericks scoreless over the next seven innings. The senior right-hander settled in to the tune of retiring seven in a row in one stretch with five of the outs via strikeouts. He remained unbeaten on the season with a 4-0 mark after striking out 10 and walking one while scattering five hits.
SDSU added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by
Jordan Sagedahl before Frost put the game further out of reach with a three-run homer to right field in the top of the seventh. It was Frost's team-leading 16th round-tripper of the season.
The final Jackrabbit run of the game scored in the eighth inning when
Reece Anderson singled home pinch-runner
Adam Benes.
SDSU finished with a 13-5 advantage in hits, with Frost, Parry and Anderson among the six Jackrabbits with two hits each. Henry Zipay tallied two of the Mavericks' five hits.
Bell logged six innings with three strikeouts and two walks in a losing effort for Omaha.
