BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State baseball team scored nine unanswered runs Saturday afternoon to top league-leading St. Thomas 9-5 in the first of a three-game series at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits move to 16-19 on the season and are above .500 in conference play at 8-7. St. Thomas drops to 13-15 overall and 8-4 in the Summit League. The Tommies dropped their first conference contest since April 6.
St. Thomas worked its way out to a 5-0 lead with multiple runs in both the third and fifth frames.
The Jacks' comeback bid began in the bottom half of the fifth. With
Reece Anderson and
Jordan Sagedahl in scoring position,
Cael Frost knocked a two-RBI single through the left side to put the Jacks on the board. SDSU plated another run in the sixth. Andersen put a ball in play that resulted in a throwing error, allowing
Jess Bellows to reach home on a fielder's choice to pull SDSU within two.
With two outs on the board in the seventh,
Bryce Ronken pinch hit for the Jacks' and sent a shot deep down the left field line to score
Luke Luskey and
Cade Stuff, tying the game at 5-5.
Dawson Parry won the game in dramatic fashion for the Jackrabbits. With
Cael Frost and Sagedahl aboard, Parry homered on a 3-2 count to give SDSU its first lead of the contest.
Davis Carr recorded an RBI single later in the frame to score pinch-runner
Thatcher Kozal for the 9-5 final score.
Sagedahl and Frost each finished the day with multiple hits for the Jacks, both going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Alex Clemons picked up the win and improves to 3-2 on the year. He threw 2.0 innings in relief and notched two strikeouts while giving up three hits and one walk. Starter
Nic McCay went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and three walks. He struck out nine batters.
Carl Cano takes the loss for the Tommies. He allowed three hits and four runs in 2/3 innings of work.
NOTES
- Dawson Parry has 13 home runs on the season, the second-most on the team. He leads the Jackrabbits with 51 RBIs this year.
- Cael Frost has hit safely in eight straight games.

The final two games of the the series will be played with a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
