MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — An impressive outing by starting pitcher
Shannon Lasey, combined with opportunistic hitting, boosted the South Dakota State softball team to a 7-0 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The victory for SDSU over Minnesota was its first over the Gophers in 17 years, while the non-conference victory extended the Jackrabbits' win streak to 15 games.Â
Â
The Gophers looked to be the team that was going to get on the scoreboard first. After the Jackrabbit lineup went down in order, Minnesota's lineup had two runners on base with two outs in the first inning. Lasey was able to pick up a strikeout to get out of the frame.Â
Â
After another 1-2-3 inning for Minnesota starter Jacie Hambrick in the second, Lasey again had to work through a threat in the bottom half of the frame. She began the inning with two strikeouts, however the Gophers got two runners on via a walk and single. Lasey avoided any damage by forcing a groundout which resulted in a fielder's choice.Â
Â
SDSU jumped ahead in the third with a four-run inning.
Alli Boyle walked to lead-off the frame and
Madi Conklin reached base thanks to a fielding error. A one-out single by
Mia Jarecki loaded the bases to bring
Emma Osmundson to the plate. SDSU's senior outfielder crushed a full-count pitch to right-center field scoring all three runners en route to a three-run triple. She'd eventually be plated as
Lindsey Culver hit an RBI single to make it 4-0.Â
Â
Lasey cruised in the circle. The Gophers were able to only muster one runner on base per inning over the next three as the Jackrabbits extended their advantage.Â
Â
An RBI double by Osmundson in the top of the fifth made the score 5-0 in favor of South Dakota State. The sixth inning saw the Jackrabbits make it 7-0 as
Brooke Dumont was plated on an RBI double by Boyle, followed by an RBI single by
Tori Tollefson.Â
Â
Lasey closed a complete-game performance out in dominant fashion. She forced three groundouts in the sixth to set the Gophers down in order, then had a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn her second seven-inning shutout of the season.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits tallied seven hits in the win. Osmundson had a team-high two hits and recorded four RBIs. Seven different Jacks scored runs. Lasey improved to 9-8 on the season for SDSU. She allowed four hits and four walks while striking out five batters. A runner didn't reach third base in the outing for Lasey.
