BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State got two strong starts in the circle and produced a combined 13 runs in a doubleheader on Friday at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium versus Kansas City. The Jacks opened the three-game set with 8-1 and 5-2 victories over the Roos.Â

Game OneÂ
The Jackrabbits jumped ahead early and responded to Kansas City's lone run scored in the contest to earn an 8-1 series-opening win.

Mia Jarecki singled to lead off the first and worked her way to third, while a
Lindsey Culver walk led to a stolen base to put runners on second and third.
Rozelyn Carrillo hit a one-out single, plating both Jarecki and Culver, and advanced to third during the process of the play. A
Brooke Dumont RBI single plated Carrillo as SDSU took a 3-0 advantage.Â

SDSU starting pitcher
Tori Kniesche cruised through the opening innings allowing just a single in the third. A solo home run for the Roos in the fourth cut the deficit to 3-1.Â

Kansas City had another opportunity in the fifth. A walk and single eventually led to runners sitting on second and third base with one out. Kniesche worked her way out of the threat, striking a batter out and forcing a groundout to get SDSU to bat in the bottom of the frame.Â

South Dakota State put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth.
Emma Osmundson led the inning off with a solo home run. Culver followed with a double and Carrillo reached base on a fielding error. Another RBI single by
Brooke Dumont gave SDSU a 5-1 lead. The Jacks scored another run via wild pitch, then a sacrifice fly by
Madi Conklin led to two more SDSU runs pushing the score to 8-1.Â

Kniesche didn't allow another hit to the Roos lineup over her final two innings work to earn the complete-game victory. She gave up three hits, walked one batter and hit one, while striking out 10 Kansas City hitters. She improved to 11-5 overall this season.Â

Dumont had a 3-for-4 performance at the plate for the Jackrabbits. Jarecki and Culver each had multi-hit performances.Â

Game Two
Kansas City briefly took a lead in the second ballgame of the day, but SDSU responded with a four-run inning on its way to a 5-2 victory.Â

Shannon Lasey gave up just two hits in the opening four innings as she controlled things in the circle.Â

The Jackrabbits got out to a 1-0 edge when Dumont hit a solo home run to lead-off the bottom of the second.Â

Kansas City had just two hits in the top of the fifth, but the made the most of them along with a walk. The Roos had both an RBI double and RBI single on consecutive at-bats to jump ahead, 2-1.Â

The visitors' lead didn't last long.

Conklin began the fifth with a single. Jarecki and Osmundson would join her on base via walks to load the bases. Carrillo stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a strike off the right-field wall. She drove in all three runners and wound up with a triple to put the Jackrabbits back in front, 4-2. Carrillo would be plated on the next at-bat as Dumont hit an RBI single to push the score to 5-2.Â

Two runners reached base in the top of the sixth for the Roos, but SDSU found their way out of the inning. A fielder's choice play made by Carrillo, followed by a double play started by
Cheyanne Masterson, ended any threat.Â

Lasey threw just four pitches in the seventh to close the second game out with a victory. She improved to 7-8 on the season with her complete-game performance. Lasey allowed two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three.Â

Dumont and Conklin had two hits apiece for the Jackrabbits. Dumont and Carrillo accounted for all five of SDSU's RBIs.

Notes
- South Dakota State improved to 23-18 overall on the season while Kansas City dropped to 14-23. The Jackrabbits are now the lone team undefeated in conference play with a 7-0 record in Summit League action. The Roos are now 3-5.Â
- The Jackrabbits didn't commit a fielding error across the two games of the doubleheader.Â
