BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State begins its pursuit for a conference tournament title on Thursday when the Jackrabbits take on South Dakota at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. First pitch between the Jacks and Coyotes is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Â
The Jackrabbits make their Summit League tournament debut for the second consecutive year against South Dakota. South Dakota upset SDSU last season, 2-0, in the Jackrabbits' opening game as the Yotes advanced into the winner's bracket. The Yotes capitalized on a two-run home run, one of their three hits in the game, along with a two-hit shutout by pitcher Clara Edwards. The Coyotes won their opening game of the 2024 tournament, 6-5, in extra innings over North Dakota.Â
Â
SDSU won both games as part of a doubleheader against South Dakota in Vermillion on March 21.
Tori Kniesche threw a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory, then
Shannon Lasey allowed just two hits in a 7-0 win.
Â
The Jackrabbits sit at 31-20 overall after ending the regular season at Omaha. The Mavericks won two of three games over the Jacks. Omaha ended SDSU's 17-game winning streak which at the time had been the longest active streak in Division I softball. The Mavs also halted a 46-game winning streak in conference regular season games that was also a Division I best.
Â
In the process of the Omaha series, the Jacks' lone win helped SDSU clinch the Summit League's regular season crown. The regular season title has been won by the Jackrabbits four straight years.
Â
SDSU and Omaha have squared off in the last three Summit League Championship games. The Jacks had to defeat the Mavs twice in tournament play en route to titles in 2021 and 2022. Omaha beat SDSU, 1-0, in Brookings for the 2023 title. The Mavs hold a 71-39-1 record over SDSU all-time, but SDSU has won 17 of the last 22 meetings.
Â
The Summit League announced its All-Summit League award winners for the 2024 season on Tuesday. Junior second baseman
Mia Jarecki was recognized as The Summit League Player of the Year. Jarecki is the fourth Jackrabbit to earn the award, joining current teammate
Rozelyn Carrillo who was bestowed the honor in 2022.Â
Â
SDSU had a conference-high five players selected to the First Team All-Summit League squad. Joining Jarecki on it were
Lindsey Culver,
Brooke Dumont,
Tori Kniesche and
Emma Osmundson. Jarecki earned her second straight First Team honors while Kniesche claimed First Team accolades all four years of her college career. Osmundson is a three-time All-Summit League performer and First Team recipient twice. Culver earned her second First Team honors and they were her first since she was a freshman. Dumont, who was an All-Tournament Team selection last May, earned her first All-Summit laurels.
Â
SDSU had three others named to the Second Team in
Jocelyn Carrillo,
Rozelyn Carrillo and Lasey. Both Carrillo sisters have multiple selections to the All-Summit League squads, while Lasey claimed her first-career honors.
Â
The Jacks have been carried at the plate this season by the players that make up the top three spots in its order for a majority of their season. Jarecki, Osmundson and Culver all sit among the best in The Summit League in multiple hitting categories. Dumont has jumped over .300 batting in in recent weeks at the catcher position. Kniesche heads into the tournament as the program record holder on several career charts.
