VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota State opened up the cross country season against the University of South Dakota and NAIA Mount MarTy at the Coyote Classic Friday night.
Emma Gonzalez was the first Jackrabbit to cross the line of the women's 5K race. Gonzalez finished in sixth place with a time of 18:53.86. Nina Dawson finished not far behind in seventh, clocking a time of 18:56.89.
Nicole Swanson finished 12th in her collegiate debut at 19:19.58. Kadense Dooley was next across the line with a time of 20:03.36 to place 19th. Lindsey Rotz and Hannah Neusch finished together in 22nd and 23rd. Rotz clocked a time of 20:40.80 while Neusch finished at 20:55.70.
Brandon Kampsen made his season debut with a first-place finish in the men's 6K race. Kampsen crossed the line at 18:26.36. Luke Johnson was next across the line in fourth with a time of 18:43.66.
Cashton Johnson crossed the line in 11th place with a time of 19:13.03. Tyler O'Neill was the final Jackrabbit across the line with a time of 19:48.17 to place 16th.
Along with the four Jackrabbits, Dale Johnson, Eli Hall, Jared Lutmer, Joe Dustin, Sean Murphy, Keaton Olson, and Ty Brouwer competed at the Coyote Classic unattached. Dale Johnson finished in the top 5 with a time of 18:44.40. Hall took seventh with a time of 18:48.67 and Lutmer finished 10th with a time of 19:04.38.
Up Next: The Jacks head to Sioux Falls for the Augustana Twilight on Sept. 6 at Yankton Trail Park. The women's 5K will start at 8:30 p.m. and the men's four mile will begin at 9:00 p.m.
