South Dakota State heads into the second weekend of the season with a 3-0 mark after beating Florida A&M, Georgia State and Indiana State at the Georgia State Invitational. The Jackrabbits take on Western Illinois, IUC and Purdue Fort Wayne this weekend at the Leatherneck Classic.
KEY STORYLINES
- South Dakota State is 3-0 for the first time since starting 3-0 in 2010. If the Jackrabbits win their opening match at the Leatherneck Classic, they will be 4-0 for the first time since 2006. The Jacks won the first five matches of the 2006 season.
- South Dakota State is one of 72 unbeaten teams in the country as of Thursday.
- As of Thursday, Sylvie Zgonc ranks fourth in the country in kills per set at 5.60. Her 25 kills in a three-set win over FAMU last weekend matched the SDSU three-set record and is the national high for a three-set match this season.
- Sylvie Zgonc was named MVP of the GSU Invite and is the reigning Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week after averaging 5.6 kills per set at a .414 clip last weekend.
- Sydni Schetnan and Rylee Martin also earned spots on the Georgia State Invite all-tournament team. Schetnan averaged 1.30 blocks per set and hit .382 on the weekend. Martin dished 10.70 assists pet set and notched five kills.
- SDSU returns three full-time starters from 2023 in Sylvie Zgonc, Katie Van Egdom and Sydni Schetnan.
- Zgonc and Van Egdom, returning outside hitters, ranked fourth and seventh in the conference in kills per set last season.
- Zgonc is back for her sophomore season after earning Summit League Freshman of the Year and Summit League First Team honors a year ago.
- Schetnan led the Jacks in blocks per set and was fourth in kills per set in 2023. Rylee Martin played in all but nine sets last season and averaged four assists per set.
- Sylvie Zgonc and Sydni Schetnan were named Preseason Players to Watch by the Summit League this week.
- SDSU's 2024 roster features a blend of seven returners and eight newcomers. The team comes with plenty of experience as there are eight players listed as a junior, senior or graduate student.
- Dan Georgalas enters his fifth season as the Jackrabbits' head coach. SDSU is 55-58 overall and 34-34 in the Summit League under Georgalas.
- SDSU will host the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls September 19-21.
- The Jackrabbits' newly renovated home facility, First Bank & Trust Arena, will officially debut with the Jackrabbits' first home match against Kansas City October 3.
