SIOUX FALLS — Gigi Hioki cruised to two individual titles in the freestyle events and Anna Mei Castro swept the diving events to pace the South Dakota State women's swimming and diving team in dual action Friday versus Augustana. However, the Vikings came away with a narrow victory, winning by a 125-118.5 score at the Midco Aquatic Center.
SDSU dropped to 2-5 in duals this season.
A sophomore from Liberty Lake, Washington, Hioki won her two individual events by a combined 21 seconds after clocking times of 1 minute, 53.03 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and 5:10.44 in the 500 freestyle. Jackrabbit teammates Aubrey Douds (1:58.24) and Isabella Gnewuch (5:26.49) were runners-up in the 200 and 500, respectively.
Gnewuch also placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.49 seconds.
Hioki and Douds also swam the first two legs of SDSU's winning 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Emma Schultz and Hannah Miller for a time of 3:31.75 in the final event of the evening.
Castro, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, claimed the 1-meter diving title with a score of 222.90 points over six dives before earning the sweep with a total of 254.25 points over six dives on the 3-meter board.
Other individual event winners for the Jackrabbits in the swimming events were freshman Kailee Crane in the 200 individual medley, 2:11.40, and sophomore Poppy Mead in the 1,000 freestyle, 10:58.15.
