BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State kicks off day one of the SDSU Open with seven top-five finishes with three wins on Friday evening.
Caiden Fredrick and Ethan Fischer kicked off the night as the pair finished second and third, respectively. Fredrick threw a 176-03 (53.74m), while Fischer hit a mark of 173-10 (52.98m). Caymen Gebheim competed in discus as well as an unattached athlete. Gebheim took fourth in his discus debut with a mark of 169-07 (51.69m).
On the women's side, Milee Young won the discus with a mark of 151-11 (46.30m). Lydia Hill and Kaitlynn Bot posted top-10 finishes as Hill placed eighth with a mark of 127-04 (38.83m), while Bot took ninth with a mark of 125-10 (38.36m). Ryann Moline and Kiylee Westra competed as well. Moline finished 11th with a throw of 120-04 (36.86m), and Westra took 13th with a mark of 120-04 (35.21m).
The hurdlers showed up and showed out Friday evening. Jenna Johnson posted a 300-hurdle program record of 43.74 to take gold. Jeremiah Donahoe posted a personal record as well, taking first with a time of 38.66 to become the program's second-fastest 300-hurdle performer.
Katelyn Darnell competed in the pentathlon for the first time in 2025. Darnell started the day well in the 60-hurdles, tying her personal record to finish first in the event. Later, the senior showed off her strength in the shot put, throwing a personal record of 38-07.50 (11.77m) to take first. Darnell finished off the night with a second-place finish in the 800-meter with a time of 2:34.49. Overall, the senior finished second with 3325 points.
Laura Bogue competed alongside Darnell in her pentathlon debut. Bogue finished ninth in the 60-hurdles with a time of 10.02. Next, Bogue took seventh in high jump with a jump of 4-06.25 (1.38m). Bogue showed off her skills to end the night, winning the 800-meter with a time of 2:18.49. Overall, Bogue finished with 2835 to take fifth of 15 competitors, and impressive showing for her first-ever collegiate pentathlon.
