South Dakota State appears in its ninth NCAA Tournament on Friday as the Jackrabbits gear up to face Iowa in Iowa City. The Jacks and Hawkeyes are scheduled for a 5 p.m. first kick at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
SDSU completed a run through The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship behind three shutouts. The Jackrabbits, the No. 3 seed in the conference standings, hosted Omaha in the opening round and won 1-0 thanks to a seventh-minute goal by
Jenna Maloy. SDSU traveled down to Tulsa, Okla., for the semifinal and championship rounds hosted by Oral Roberts. The Jacks took on No. 2 Denver, which shared regular season championship honors, in the semifinals on Thursday. A 72nd minute goal by
Lauren Walter made the difference as SDSU defeated the Pioneers in the semifinals for the second straight season.
For a second straight year the Jacks took on ORU in the championship Sunday.
Ellie Gusman scored a goal in the ninth minute, then
Adrianne Agbayani added to the tally in the 72nd minute, to seal another title.Â
The Jackrabbits have won three consecutive Summit League tournament championships. It matches the program's best stretch, having previously won three straight tournament titles from 2014-16. Former member Oakland holds the longest streak with four straight titles (2000-03). The Jacks set a new conference record, surpassing Oakland with SDSU earning their ninth Summit League Tournament crown.Â
SDSU has been stellar recently among its Summit League peers. The Jackrabbits have won the conference tournament title in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The program also claimed a United Soccer Conference championship in 2006.
SDSU's first NCAA appearance came in 2008. The squad's first showing also featured its first NCAA Tournament victory as the Jackrabbits beat Colorado in the opening round in the Twin Cities, 1-0. The Jacks fell in the following round to host Minnesota, 2-0. SDSU is 1-7-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.Â
The Jacks have seen their share of roster change, however multiple players have played in SDSU's current stretch of NCAA Tournament showings. Junior
Taryn Hettich scored a goal in SDSU's 2023 matchup against Nebraska that went the Huskers' way, 5-2. Gusman and
Alohi Ramos also appeared in that match. Four other current Jacks were on that team but did not play in
Abria Brooker,
Lauren Eckerle,
Ava Grate and
Shelby Hopeau.
SDSU and Iowa square off for the first time in 16 years on Friday. The two sides met three straight seasons beginning in 2007. Iowa beat SDSU in Brookings in the first matchup, 3-2. The 2008 contest saw the Jacks beat the Hawkeyes, 2-1. Iowa won 2-0 in 2009 in Iowa City.
Iowa earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after posting an 11-4-4 overall record, including a 6-2-3 mark in Big Ten Conference play to finish tied for third in the league standings. The Hawkeyes are making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance — a program record. Friday's match marks the third straight year Iowa has hosted an NCAA Tournament contest at home. Iowa defeated Bucknell, 2-0, in 2023 drawing a program-record crowd of 2,639 fans. In 2024, the Hawkeyes topped Missouri State, 2-1, with 2,267 fans in attendance. It marks the program's sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes are led by 12th-year head coach Dave Dilanni.
