The South Dakota State men's basketball program makes its return to Cancun, Mexico, for the 2025 Cancun Challenge that tips off in the ballroom of the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. SDSU opens play on site of the multi-team event by facing Utah Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT. The Jackrabbits complete their international trip with a 7:30 p.m. CT contest on Wednesday against UC Irvine.
SDSU has played in the Cancun Challenge two prior times. The Jacks' last appearance in the MTE in 2015 saw SDSU win the Mayan Division with victories over Houston Baptist (92-68) and Cleveland State (77-66). SDSU participated in the 2008 edition of the event, defeating Central Arkansas (72-67) but falling to UCF (66-64).
South Dakota State began the Cancun Challenge this past Friday with a campus-site game as part of the event. The Jackrabbits hosted Georgia State and essentially led from the start en route to a 105-58 thrashing of the Panthers. SDSU scored 100-plus points and had five players in double digits scoring for the first time since last February. The Jacks also shot over 60% from the field for the first time in a year-long span.
The Jacks set a couple near record marks in the win over Georgia State. The 47-point victory was nearly SDSU's largest against a Division I foe. It was the largest win against DI competition since December of 2018 when the Jacks defeated Savannah State at home, 139-72.
SDSU is receiving contributions across its lineup so far this season and multiple players have stood out of late.
Joe Sayler is averaging 13.3 points per game, over his last four contests, while he's 26 of 51 from the field in his last five games.
Trey Buchanan has scored a combined 39 points over the last two games on 13-17 FG and 10-13 3FG.
Matthew Mors had a season-high 18 points, his most since his freshman year, versus Georgia State.
The Jackrabbits are 1-3 all-time against the Wolverines. The two sides played home-and-home series in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. Utah Valley has won the last three straight meetings.
SDSU is 1-2 against UC Irvine. The Jackrabbits and Anteaters met twice in 2016-17, both UCI wins. The Jacks won in Brookings, 65-54, in their last matchup on Nov. 10, 2017 in Frost Arena.
