South Dakota State makes its first true road trip of the season as the Jackrabbits travel to Cedar Falls to face Northern Iowa. The Jacks and Panthers are slated to square off at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the McLeod Center.
The series between the two foes is one that has a long history. The Jackrabbits and Panthers had an annual series that began in the 1930s and ran until 1978. SDSU holds a 2-4 record during its Division I era against Northern Iowa, while the Jacks lead the all-time series 52-37.
South Dakota State and Northern Iowa last met in the U.S. Bank Stadium Basketball Classic in Minneapolis. The Jackrabbits outshot the Panthers by a 51-31% margin from the field in the Dec. 1, 2018, clash while benefiting from a 24-point and 11-rebound effort by Mike Daum, en route to an 82-50 win. SDSU's four losses in the series during its DI tenure have all come in Cedar Falls.
The Jackrabbits enter Sunday's contest with a 2-0 record. SDSU began the 2025-26 season with a 75-66 victory over Merrimack in the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon on Monday in Sioux Falls. The Jacks followed that with a tight 68-62 victory over Dakota State in their home opener on Thursday.Â
SDSU's two wins have been boosted by the play of sophomore guard
Jaden Jackson. A season ago, Jackson had a pair of 19-point scoring outputs. He's opened this campaign with a 23-point performance against Merrimack, then recorded a game-high 20 on Thursday versus the Trojans.Â
Senior forward
Matthew Mors had 16 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks against the Warriors Monday. Sophomore
Joe Sayler had his first double-digit scoring game of the year Thursday as he poured in 11 points. Sharing center responsibilities have been
Damon Wilkinson and
Alec Squires. Wilkinson scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Monday, while Squires played 24 minutes and snagged 10 rebounds on Thursday.
The Panthers are led by 20th-year head coach Ben Jacobson. UNI won its opener Thursday, 86-57, over CSU Northridge. Four Panthers scored double digits led by Leon Bond III's 23 points.
