South Dakota State takes part in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge this week, beginning with a Wednesday contest at Northern Arizona. The Jackrabbits and Lumberjacks battle in a 7 p.m. CT matchup in Flagstaff inside the Rolle Activity Center.
The Big Sky-Summit Challenge officially enters its third season as the Jacks have split their games the last two years. SDSU has played a pair of Big Sky Conference opponents in each of the last six seasons, excluding the shortened 2020-21 Covid season. The Jackrabbits have split their matchups with their Big Sky foes in every season during that span.Â
SDSU returns to action following its stay in Mexico for the Cancun Challenge. State opened the event in Brookings with a campus game versus Georgia State and defeated the Panthers, 101-58, on Nov. 21. The 47-point win was SDSU's largest against a Division I foe since 2018.Â
The Jacks traveled to Cancun for back-to-back games against Utah Valley and UC Irvine on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26, respectively. SDSU fell in the pair of games 75-52 and 64-52. Both contests saw the Jackrabbits shoot less than 34% from the field and commit 15-plus turnovers in each game. The Jacks had just one double-digit scorer in each contest.
A scoring standout for SDSU of late is newcomer
Trey Buchanan. Over his last four games, Buchanan is averaging 14.8 points by shooting 69% from the floor and 61.9% from long range. He's done so while playing 19 minutes per game.
South Dakota State and Northern Arizona meet for the first time when they compete on Wednesday. The Jackrabbits will host Idaho at 2 p.m. on Saturday in First Bank & Trust Arena. SDSU is 53-38 against the current contingent of Big Sky members which includes a 37-20 mark versus Northern Colorado.
Northern Arizona is on a three-game winning streak and 4-2 overall heading into Wednesday's contest. The Lumberjacks are led by Zack Davidson's team-leading 16.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. NAU was picked to finish 10th in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches & Media Polls.Â
