South Dakota State and Omaha square off to begin The Summit League slate on Thursday. The Jackrabbits and Mavericks are set for a 4:15 p.m. clash inside First Bank & Trust Arena.
Both teams enter Thursday's meeting at 7-8 overall as they play in their respective conference opening games. The Jackrabbits and Mavericks look to contend again in The Summit League as the two sides represent the conference's previous regular season and tournament champions. SDSU claimed the league's 2024 title and Omaha serves as the reigning champion in 2025.
SDSU is 11-7 all-time in Summit League openers. The Jackrabbits have won their last five conference-opening games. The last loss to begin a conference slate came in on Dec. 29, 2019, with an 81-78 defeat at Omaha.Â
The Jacks and Mavs split their 2025 meetings. SDSU saw its 10-game win streak over Omaha end in the Mavs' Baxter Arena on Jan. 11 in an 87-80 defeat. SDSU beat Omaha in Brookings, 98-85, on Feb. 13. SDSU's
Kalen Garry scored a combined 39 points in the two contests.
Garry has been at the forefront of a trio of Jackrabbits that have been standouts of late. Over the last five games the junior guard is averaging 17.6 points on 58.5% shooting and 62.5% from 3-point range. He also has averaged 5.2 boards and 4.2 assists per contest.Â
Joining Garry in double digits scoring in that span are
Jaden Jackson (14.2) and
Damon Wilkinson (14.0). Jackson has played a team-high 31 minutes in the last five games while he's averaged 2.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals. Wilkinson has shot 57.1% in the stretch to go along with 6.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks.
SDSU faced a tough list of opponents to close out the non-conference slate. The Jackrabbits have fallen in three straight games to Wyoming (87-72), Milwaukee (88-87) and No. 1/2 Arizona (99-71). The Jacks' last four-game losing streak came in the 2022-23 campaign.Â
The Jackrabbits follow Thursday's contest with a 1 p.m. Saturday matchup at North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks, which are 6-10 overall, get their league schedule started at home Thursday versus ORU.
