South Dakota State returns to First Bank & Trust Arena on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against Idaho. The meeting serves as the second game of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge.Â
The Jackrabbits won their opening contest of the Challenge, as well as picked up their first true road victory of the season, on Wednesday by beating Northern Arizona 75-62 in Flagstaff. South Dakota State is now 5-4 overall.
SDSU trailed 14-8 just over eight minutes into the first half in the Rolle Activity Center.
Joe Sayler went on an eight-point personal scoring run, while an 11-0 run along with a stretch of 16 of 17 points scored by the Jackrabbits, led to SDSU going ahead for good with 7:38 to go in the first half.
Four Jacks scored in double digits led by Sayler. He scored a season-high 20 points while also pacing SDSU in assists (3) and steals (3).
The Jackrabbits will try to claim a sweep in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge for the first time. Officially in its third season of the event, State has played a pair of Big Sky opponents in each of the last six seasons, excluding the 2020-21 campaign. The Jackrabbits have split their matchups with their Big Sky foes in every season during that span.Â
South Dakota State and Idaho have split their 10 all-time matchups dating back to the 2006-07 season. The two teams' last meeting came in the 2021-22 season that saw the Jackrabbits go 30-5 overall and included their undefeated run in Summit League play. One of SDSU's losses that season was a 98-84 defeat at Idaho on Dec. 8 of that slate. Baylor Scheierman recorded a double-double behind 22 points and 14 rebounds, while four others scored in double digits. Idaho outshot SDSU 54.9%-42.6% from the field and 54.2%-38.1% from deep. The Vandals finished that season 9-22 overall.
SDSU is 4-1 against Idaho at home. Their last meeting in Brookings came on Dec. 21, 2019. SDSU won that contest by an 85-57 score. Douglas Wilson had an SDSU-high 18 points.
Idaho is 5-3 overall heading into Saturday. The Vandals' current Net ranking of 166 is the program's highest ever (since 2018-19). Idaho was picked fourth in the Big Sky Preseason Poll.
