SIOUX FALLS – Freshman Nik Keuser's sweep of the breaststroke events was highlighted by a school-record in the 100-yard race as the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Coyote Invite.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Keuser clocked a winning and SDSU-record time of 55.06 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, eclipsing the previous record of 55.11 seconds set by Wyatt Rumrill in 2019.
Keuser ran away with the 200 breaststroke title as his nearest competitor was nearly seven seconds behind his winning time of 2 minutes, 1.39 seconds. That mark also puts Keuser in the No. 3 spot in the event in program history.
Kolden Kringen also was a two-time winner for the Jackrabbit men, who combined to win eight event titles in the two-day, unscored meet at Midco Aquatic Center.
After winning the 200 individual medley in Friday's opening session, Kringen posted victories in both the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly on Saturday. First, he led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots in the 200 freestyle in which the trio were separated by a mere .08 seconds. Kringen recorded a winning time of 1:42.69, followed by Cody Vertin in 1:42.70 and Braxton McGrath in third at 1:42.77.
A sophomore from Williston, North Dakota, Kringen later won the 200 fly in 1:53.36 for his third title of the meet.
Vertin claimed an individual title of his own in the 100 IM, posting a top time of 51.81 seconds, with Kringen placing fourth in 52.76 seconds. It was the second title of the weekend for Vertin, who swam his way to victory in the 500 freestyle on Friday.
Also victorious for the Jackrabbits on Saturday was Aiden Carstensen, who notched a time of 49.96 seconds to win the 100 backstroke. Carstensen added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle in 46.61 seconds.
McGrath turned in his second third-place finish of the day in the 1,650 freestyle, logging a time of 16:42.73. Braeden Glor also contributed a third-place showing in the 200 backstroke, 1:55.62.
SDSU also received a pair of third-place finishes in the diving events. Oscar Francis placed third on the 1-meter board with a season-best 214.35 points, while freshman Seth Berens took third in the 3-meter competition by scoring 230.60 points over six dives.
