Weather has played a role in South Dakota State softball's upcoming road trip. The Jackrabbits have rearranged their schedule, however, and will still play four games over a three-day span.Â
SDSU now partakes in three games at Central Arkansas' Michell Short and Adam Brown Tournament in Conway. The tournament format was adjusted due to persistent cold conditions in the region. The Jackrabbits open play against the host Bears at 3 p.m. on Sunday. They follow that game by taking on No. 11/13 Oklahoma State immediately following with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m. SDSU will face UCA again at Farris Field on Monday at 2:30 p.m. The Jacks then travel to Tulsa to play the Golden Hurricane at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.Â
The Jacks will have competed in Central Arkansas' tournament three straight seasons. SDSU went 1-2 at it in 2023 and were 3-2 at the 2024 edition. Last season's tournament saw State drop a 4-3 decision to eventual NCAA Tournament participant Southern Illinois, as well as a 6-4 game to the Bears. SDSU played in a Tulsa-hosted tournament two years ago and defeated the Golden Hurricane, 7-1, that March.
The Jackrabbits, after opening the season with an undefeated four-game showing at East Texas A&M's tournament, went 1-4 in their stay at Tarleton State's campus last week. SDSU's 10-9 win at Austin Peay featured a combined four Jackrabbit home runs by
Amanda Vacanti,
Brooke Dumont,
Akayla Barnard and
Alli Boyle. Barnard hit a solo home run to tie the game in the seventh, then Boyle hit a three-run home run with two outs, to boost SDSU to a victory.
Five Jackrabbits have been standouts at the plate in the early part of the season. Vacanti, Dumont,
Mia Jarecki,
Emma Christensen and
Abby Gentry are all hitting .400 with more than 17 at-bats.
Vacanti went 8-for-16 across five games last week, produced five RBIs and scored four runs. That same stretch saw Dumont go 8-for-11 (.727) with two home runs, nine RBIs, four doubles and was walked six times.
Christensen and Jarecki, along with Barnard, are tied for a team-best eight runs scored this season. Dumont has teams highs in home runs (3), doubles (5) and RBIs (11).Â
SDSU's pitching staff has a combined 5.06 ERA through 56 2/3 innings thrown through nine games. Vacanti has a team-low 3.23 ERA. Among the Jackrabbits' primary starters,
Tayler Baker has the lowest ERA (4.31).
Madi Mangulis has thrown the most innings having pitched 17 1/3.Â
