South Dakota State returns to action after a 10-day break between games on Tuesday when the Jackrabbits take on Iowa in Iowa City. The Jacks and Hawkeyes are slated for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Iowa's Bob Pearl Softball Field. Summit League play has already begun, however South Dakota State will begin its conference slate this weekend when the Jacks travel to Kansas City. The Jacks and Roos square off in a three-game series beginning at noon on Saturday at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy facility.
The Jackrabbits enjoyed some rest following a grueling road stretch that came to a close through SDSU's Spring Break week. The Jacks, which won't play their home opener until April 5, most recently played 12 games within a week span at Nebraska, Saint Louis and Missouri. SDSU is 15-15 overall on the season after going 9-3 during that 12-game stretch.
South Dakota State first faces an Iowa club on Tuesday that is 19-9 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes have won five of their last six games including a 7-4 victory over No. 5/6 UCLA. Kansas City is 4-20 overall, but is 1-2 in league play after earning a win at home in its series versus North Dakota State.Â
SDSU is 3-11 all-time against Iowa. The last time the two sides met was at the 2023 National Invitational Softball Championship. The Hawkeyes defeated the Jackrabbits, 6-3, and eventually won the postseason tournament in Fort Collins, Colo. The Jackrabbits are 27-21 all-time over Kansas City and have won the last 10 meetings.Â
Sitting atop the Jackrabbits' hitting chart in multiple categories through 30 games is
Abby Gentry. The sophomore third baseman is hitting a team-best .430 and is leading SDSU in on-base percentage (.529), hits (35) and RBIs (30).Â
Four other Jacks that are currently part of the everyday lineup that hit over .300 include
Brooke Dumont (.390),
Emma Vike (.323),
Mia Jarecki (.322) and
Alli Boyle (.314). Dumont sits among the program's career top 10 chart in five different categories while Jarecki does in eight.Â
Despite the team's graduation of a strong senior class, SDSU's lineup has had a strong 30-game start to the 2025 season. SDSU's on-base percentage of .398 ranks sixth all-time currently, its slugging percentage of .498 currently ranks sixth, while the team's batting average of .301 is the best for the program since 2022.
SDSU's pitching staff has a combined 4.57 ERA through 190 innings thrown through 30 games.
Amanda Vacanti has a team-low 3.92 ERA. Freshman
Tayler Baker has started 13 games while
Madi Mangulis leads SDSU with 22 appearances.
