LARSON BREAKS SECOND RECORD OF THE SEASON
AZUSA, CALIF. — South Dakota State puts up a pair of program records, along with 17 top 10 all-time program performances across five meets and three days.
SDSU saw a successful outing at the Bryan Clay Invitational as the team walked away with two new program records. In sprinting events, Lucas Flemmer, Sam Castle, Thailan Hallman and James Pierce posted a new 4X400-meter record. The four Jackrabbits finished in third place at 3:10.32, besting the previous record of 3:10.56 set in 1998.
Cody Larson added his name to another program record, this time in the 3000-steeple. Larson finished seventh with a time of 8:30.96, obliterating the previous record of 8:43.02 set by Craig Cassen over 30 years ago. Larson's time of 8:30.69 is currently the tenth-best time in the nation so far this season.
Ben Anteau competed in the steeplechase as well, finishing at 8:58.10 to place 13th.
On the women's side, Kayla Christopherson and Eleni Lovgren posted top-10 program performances in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Christopherson placed 21st with a time of 10:28.18 to become the fourth-fastest performer of all-time, while Lovgren took 44th, crossing the line at 10:39.41 to become the fifth-fastest performer.
Brandon Kampsen was back in action this weekend to compete in the 800-meter along side Sam Castle. The pair put up top 10 times for the program as Kampsen finished 32nd at 1:49.65 to become the fifth-best performer, and Castle finished 71st with a time of 1:50.94 to become the 10th-best performer in SDSU history.
Jessica Lutmer earned an invitation to the 5000-meter Invite event. Lutmer clocked a time of 16:33.16 to finish 14th and become the fourth-best performer in program history.
In the 5000-meter Open A event, Ashlyn Hillyard posted a top-5 finish with a time of 16:35.25. Courtney Stadter competed as well, taking 18th at 16:41.53. Both Hillyard and Stadter's time pushed them into the SDSU top 10 list at fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Bryan Clay Invitational wrapped up on Friday with the 1500-meter competitions. Larson rounded out his successful weekend with a silver medal in the Open A event, crossing the line at 3:44.29. Jackson Dutcher competed as well, finishing a second behind Larson in fourth at 3:45.29.
On the women's side, Grace Waage earned a spot in the 1500-meter Invite event. The senior finished 78th with a time of 4:23.69 to become the fourth-best performer of all-time. Claire Beckman represented the Jackrabbits in the 1500-meter Open A. Beckman crossed the line at 4:25.94 to place fourth and become the sixth-fastest performer in program history.
Long Beach State University hosted two meets this week, beginning with the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Brielle Dixon finished eighth in the 100-hurdles with a time of 13.62. Pierre Lear and Carter Johnson represented the Jackrabbits in the 110-hurdles. Lear clutched bronze with a time of 13.81 and Johnson took 18th at 14.66.
Sian O'Sullivan made her way into the SDSU top 10 all-time list in the 100m as the Australian clocked 11.89 to finish 10th and become the seventh-best performer in program history.
Long Beach State hosted the Beach Invite on Saturday afternoon. Lear ran 13.80 seconds iin the 110-hurdles to win the event. Dixon improved on her hurdles time as well as the senior ran 13.46 to finish fourth.
The Jackrabbit 4X100-meter relay squads brought the heat at the Beach Invite. The men's squad, consisting of Jared Wipf, Evan Henderson, Carter Toews, and Drew Olson, secured bronze with a time of 40.85, the seventh-fastest performance in program history. The women's squad, made up of Dixon, Ellie Harris, Maggie Madsen, and O'Sullivan, claimed fourth with a time of 45.88, the third-best performance in SDSU history.
Pierce, Hallman and Flemmer competed in the 400-meter dash. Pierce finished third at 47.24, just 0.12 shy of his personal record. Hallman placed 18th with a time of 48.53, and Flemmer took 22nd at 48.80.
After their successful 4X100-meter run,Toews, Wener, Wipf, and Olson competed in the 100-meter race. Toews took 12th at 10.65, Werner finished 16th with a time of 10.67, and both Wipf and Olson tied for 21st as the pair crossed the line at 10.889.
Madison Kizer and Taylor Jochum had a solid outing at the Kansas Relays in high jump. Kizer won the event with a jump of 5-07.00 (1.70m) and Jochum tied for runner-up after clearing 5-05.00 (1.65m).
Ryan Karajanis represented the Jackrabbits in pole vault. Karajanis cleared 15-03.75 (4.67m) to place in the top five.
Over in throwing events, Caiden Fredrick took home silver in discus after throwing 185-08.00 (56.60m). Cayman Gebheim and Ethan Fischer competed as well. Gebheim threw a mark of 176-11.00 (53.92m) to finish ninth, while Fischer finished 11th with a throw of 173-07.00 (52.90m).
In the hammer throw, Hunter Wallster finished sixth with a throw of 200-6.00 (61.11m). Fredrick and Ryan Hackbart finished in the top 10 as well as Fredrick hit a mark of 176-00 (53.66m) for ninth, while Hackbart placed 10th with a throw of 171-02.00 (52.17m).
On the women's side, Ryann Moline took seventh in the javelin with a mark of 138-07.00 (42.25m). Moline's mark moved her up the SDSU top 10 list from ninth-best performer to fifth.
In shot put, Jalyn Shepherd and Cloe Kalanick finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Shepherd threw a mark of 45-03.00 (13.79m), while Kalanick threw 44-10.75 (13.68m).
Hannah Spoden won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:14.75. On the men's side, Joe Dustin finished runner-up at 1:52.01, Cade Sanvik placed fourth with a time of 1:52.84 and Sean Murphy took seventh at 1:54.39.
Anteau and Sanvik represented the Jackrabbits in the 1500-meter race, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. Anteau clocked 3:55.75, while Sanvik cruised across the line at 3:56.67.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits open with a mid-week meet at the University of Minnesota, before heading to Iowa for the Drake Relays and Kip Javrin Invite beginning Thursday afternoon. Part of the team will travel north to Fargo for the NDSU Open on Friday.
