BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State sends nine athletes to the West Coast, while the remainder of the Jackrabbit squad heads to Vermillion for the USD Early Bird Friday afternoon.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"We are fortunate to be a part of one of the best distance meets at the NCAA level. The student athletes are looking forward to the opportunity to mix it up with some of the top programs in the NCAA. It will be great for the majority of the team to open up this weekend at USD. There should be great competition which will help us get a good measure of where we are at."
Eight distance athletes will compete at the Stanford Invitational on Friday. Grace Waage, Jessica Lutmer, and Courtney Stadter will represent the women's team on the West Coast. Waage will compete in the 1500-meter run, while Stadter and Lutmer will participate in the 10,000-meter race. Jackson Dutcher, Brandon Kampsen, Cody Larson, Carson Noecker, and Josh Becker will represent the Jackrabbits on the men's side. Dutcher and Kampsen will run in the 1500-meter race, Noecker will compete in the 10,000-meter race, as well as the 5000-meter with Larson, and Becker will compete in the 3000-meter steeple.
Ben Anteau will represent South Dakota State at the Mike Fanelli Distance Carnival. Anteau is slated to run the 3000-meter steeple in heat one at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
The remainder of the team will be competing at the USD Early Bird in Vermillion. Running events will begin at noon on Friday, while field events will begin at 2:00 p.m. Due to poor projected weather, combined events have been canceled this weekend, and pole vault competition has been moved inside in the DakotaDome.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
James Pierce will be one to watch this season as the sophomore was the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field 400-meter champion in his first year of collegiate competition. Pierce also clutched gold in the 400-meter during the conference championship this past indoor season and assisted the men's 4X400-meter relay team to a new program record.
Hunter Wallster will be returning this year as the former hammer throw champion of last year's outdoor conference championship. This past indoor track season, the senior clutched gold in the weight throw with a personal record of 68-00.05 (20.74m) and will undoubtedly be interesting to watch in his final run as a Jackrabbit.
Brielle Dixon will be one to keep an eye on this year as the senior enters the outdoor season as a former all-league finisher in the 100-hurdles and an NCAA West First Round qualifier. Along with her successful run last season, Dixon turned heads throughout this past indoor season as she steadily improved her 60-hurdle time, resulting in an 8.16 60-hurdle personal record, a top-25 time in the nation. Dixon clocked her record at the Summit League Indoor Conference Championship, where she won the event and set a new meet record.
Nora Peterson will be back in action for outdoor track and field. Peterson last competed at the NCAA West First Round, where she tied her personal record of 156-04.00 (47.66m) to take 29th. Prior to this, Peterson clutched silver in the conference championship and will likely be on the hunt for gold come conference championships.
RANKINGS
USTFCCCA released its first round of conference and regional rankings on Tuesday. Both the men's and women's Jackrabbit squads were ranked fifth in the conference. The men's team took 19th in the Midwest region, while the women placed 25th.
