The rest of the Jackrabbit squad will head to Vermillion, S.D. check out the site of the Summit League Conference Championships a couple of weeks in advance. The USD Tune Up will take place at Lillibridge Track on Friday afternoon and Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Jackrabbits capped last weekend with three new program records, beginning with Madison Kizer jumping 5-10.75 (1.80m) to win the high jump at the Mount Marty Twilight.
Over at the Drake Relays, the women's sprint medley relay posted a record of their own as well. The team, consisting of Ellie Harris, Sian O'Sullivan, Cerington Jones and Lindsey Rotz, finished the race at 3:58.55 to place eighth. Harris, Sullivan, Jones and Rotz bested the previous record of 4:01.43 set in 2013 and are the only Jackrabbits to clock a sprint medley relay time under four minutes.
The most exciting event for the Jacks was hands down the distance medley relay. Brandon Kampsen, James Pierce, Sam Castle, and Cody Larson put on an unforgettable performance to smash a 50-year-old program record, set at 9:47.4 in 1973. The team ran a full 10 seconds faster than the record, finishing at 9:37.05, the highlight of which was the final 200-meter stretch where Larson bested powerhouse Iowa State University and rival University of South Dakota to take home the gold.
Other notable distance performances came from Carson Noecker, Eleni Lovgren, Ashlyn Hillyard, Jackson Dutcher and Josh Becker. Noecker and Lovgren won their respective 5000-meter races. Noecker crossed the line at 14:12.40, and Lovgren clocked 16:51.30. Hillyard placed runner-up in the 10,000-meter invite with a time of 34:49.20. Dutcher clutched bronze in the 1500-meter at 3:46.43. Becker clocked the third-fastest 3000-meter steeplechase performance in program history at 8:51.64 to finish ninth overall.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Hunter Wallster will be returning this year as the former hammer throw champion of last year's outdoor conference championship. This past indoor track season, the senior clutched gold in the weight throw with a personal record of 68-00.05 (20.74m) and will undoubtedly be interesting to watch in his final run as a Jackrabbit.
Caiden Fredrick saw an outstanding start to the outdoor season. The sophomore dominated the discus throw at the USD Challenge with a mark of 187-00 (57.00m) to win the event and set a new South Dakota State program record. Fredrick's mark of 57.00m is currently the 38th-best mark in the nation.
Brielle Dixon will be one to keep an eye on this year as the senior enters the outdoor season as a former all-league finisher in the 100-hurdles and an NCAA West First Round qualifier. Along with her successful run last season, Dixon turned heads throughout this past indoor season as she steadily improved her 60-hurdle time, resulting in an 8.16 60-hurdle personal record, a top-25 time in the nation. Dixon clocked her record at the Summit League Indoor Conference Championship, where she won the event and set a new meet record.
