BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State volleyball team swept Ole Miss 25-20, 20-18, 25-20 Friday night in the Jackrabbits' home opener at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits had 2,256 fans in attendance, the second largest home crowd in volleyball program history. SDSU's victory over the Rebels is the first win over an SEC team for the SDSU program and fourth win against a power-conference opponent in the Division I era.
As a team, SDSU recorded a .247 hitting percentage. Middles
Madison Burr and
Sydni Schetnan each hit better than .400 for the match. Burr posted a .500 clip with eight kills to go with six block assists. Schetnan hit .417 with seven kills and added two blocks for SDSU.
Annalee Ventling-Brown posted five blocks.
Sylvie Zgonc led all players with 14 kills and hit .235, a season high.
Hannah Klein matched Burr's eight kills at a .261 clip.
Setter
Rylee Martin tallied 30 assists and had three kills on five attempts. She added four digs and a block.
Joslyn Richardson led SDSU with nine digs and two ace serves. The junior libero brings her season total to seven aces through three matches played. Zgonc added seven digs and
Rachel Wieber had six.
The Rebels' Gabi Placide paced Ole Miss with 12 kills but was held to .098 hitting. Melia Johnson had six kills and seven errors. Cammy Niesen had 11 digs.
Set one: The Jackrabbits created some separation with a five-point run to lead 9-5. Burr took part in the first four points of that stretch with two block assists and two kills. Ole Miss cut the deficit to one late at 18-17, then a 3-0 SDSU stretch that included a
Sydni Schetnan kill and block gave the home team a cushion.
Sylvie Zgonc notched a kill on three of the Jacks' final four points.Â
Set two: A pair of early aces from
Joslyn Richardson and
Rachel Wieber helped SDSU to a 5-1 lead in the second set.
Rylee Martin had an ace during a 4-0 run to lead 11-4. SDSU continued to roll through set two and had a 24-15 lead before Ole Miss staved off three straight set points. The Jacks won the set 25-18.Â
Set three: The teams went back-and-forth in the final set until the Jackrabbits put together an 8-1 run to lead 19-13.
Sydni Schetnan and
Annalee Ventling-Brown teamed up on a block to start the run and
Joslyn Richardson ended it with an ace. The sides again traded points and
Hannah Klein ended the match with a kill.Â
NOTES
- South Dakota State's win over Ole Miss is its second power-conference victory of the season. The Jackrabbits beat Illinois in the season opener August 29.Â
- The top-five attended home matches in program history have come in the last year. SDSU's home opener in 2024, the first match at First Bank & Trust Arena, is the highest-attended match (2,853).Â
