VERMILLION, S.D, —The South Dakota State track and field team began the 2026 portion of its indoor schedule at the USD Alumni Meet Saturday afternoon at the Dakota Dome.
Between the men's and women's squads, SDSU had 20 top-three finishes on the day.
"I think today's competition was very productive," said Bargmann Endowed Head Coach
Rod DeHaven. "We had a couple big time performances from
Ty Nelson and
Brady Wallace to highlight the day. Overall I think group competed at a comparable level to where they were prior to break. We will be excited to be back home next weekend!"
On the men's side, Nelson was the top finisher in the triple jump, besting the second-place finisher by over a foot. The freshman posted a 49-06.25 mark to tie Gladwin Garnette for the second-best mark in program history.
Wyatt Melcher (46-10.00) finished third.
Brady Wallace also took a top-three spot on the SDSUÂ All-Time Top 10 list. Wallace cleared the 60-meter hurdle finals in 8.03 seconds to finish third in the event and become the third-fastest performer in program history.Â
In distance events,
Ty Brouwer and
Sean Murphy won their respective competitions. Brouwer went 1:59.19 in the 800 meters as the only Division I competitor in the event. Murphy took first in the mile run with a time of 4:18.69, besting teammate
Joe Dustin (4:20.05), who finished in second.
Grayson Ring and
Brooks Holen tied for second place in the high jump as both cleared 6-07.00.
Kincade Lehman also had a runner-up finish, his coming in the long jump (22-07.25).
Brady Wallace finished in third place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.03).
The women had six athletes finish runner-up Saturday.
Sian O'Sullivan (7.63) and
Silja Gunderson (8.94) took second in the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, respectively.
Annie Robinson clocked a 5:16.13 mile time to take second.
Taylor Jochum (high jump, 5-05.25),
Addy Engel (shot put, 41-07.75) and
Jalyn Shepherd (weight throw, 59-07.75) were all second in their field events. Shepherd's mark of 59-07.75 earned her a spot as the seventh-best performer in program history, replacing Jennifer Mack's mark of 59-05.50.
Hadley Carlson was third in the high jump with a 5-03.25 mark.
Taylor Schuster took third in the long jump (17.08-25) and
Josie Curry was third in the weight throw (56-11.25).
