South Dakota State heads down to Omaha for a 7 p.m. Wednesday contest against the Mavericks in Baxter Arena. The Jackrabbits follow the matchup with a three-game home stand.Â
The Jackrabbits and Mavericks meet for the second time this season. SDSU and Omaha opened The Summit League slate in Brookings on New Year's Day. After sitting tied at 36 at the halftime break, the Jackrabbits came out of the second-half gate with 13 points and never looked back en route to an 84-69 victory in First Bank & Trust Arena. SDSU's
Damon Wilkinson led the charge with a double-double behind career highs in points (24) and rebounds (19).
SDSU is 70-36 all-time against Omaha. The Jackrabbits have won 17 of the last 20 meetings against the Mavericks, however Omaha won last year's matchup in Baxter Arena by an 87-80 score. Omaha's other two victories over the course of the past 20 games between the two squads also came at home in 2019.
The Jacks are coming off a 74-69 defeat at St. Thomas last Thursday. SDSU led for a majority of the contest and had a one-point advantage with less than a minute remaining, however the Tommies did enough late to come away with the win.
Joe Sayler scored a game-high 24 points while he was followed in double digits by
Matthew Mors (12) and Wilkinson (10).
Bubz Alvarez scored a season-high nine points and
Jaden Jackson dished out a career-high seven assists. SDSU is now 10-11 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
Sayler continues to lead the Jackrabbits' scoring efforts in conference play. Across six games, the sophomore guard is averaging 19.5 points on 50% shooting, including a 52.8% clip from 3-point range. Wilkinson averages a near double-double with 14.2 points and 8.5 rebounds, while Jackson sits closely behind at 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds. Mors is scoring 11.2 points per contest and shooting 61.9%.
Omaha is 10-12 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Mavs are coming off a 77-60 victory at Kansas City following a 68-64 home loss versus South Dakota. Paul Djobet is atop Omaha's league marks in scoring (21.1), rebounding (7.9) and assists (2.7) in the Mavericks' seven Summit games.
