BROOKINGS, S.D. — Ethan Fischer tops his discus program record Friday night, while 11 Jackrabbits earn a spot on the South Dakota State top 10 all-time list at the UND Open Saturday afternoon.
The men's throwers came to play at UND as Fischer broke his own program record after fellow Jackrabbit
Caymen Gebheim bested it a couple throws before. Fischer initially set the record at the SDSU Holiday Open in 2023 with a mark of 181-03. Gebheim took the record on his fourth throw with a mark of 181-07 (55.35m), however, Fischer rose to the challenge and threw 185-10 (56.65m) on his last attempt to win the event and reclaim his title. Gebheim's throw earned him second in the competition and sets him as the second-best performer in program history.
Caiden Fredrick competed as well, claiming bronze with a mark of 180-02 (54.91m) to take third on the all-time list.
The men's throwers saw a solid performance on day two as well, with Fredrick, Fischer and
Ryan Hackbart claiming three spots in the top five. Fredrick claimed bronze with a mark of 60-11.25 (18.57m), ischer finished fourth with a throw of 60-05.25 (18.42m) and Hackbart threw 59-02.00 (18.03m) to take fifth.
The women's throwers performed remarkably as well. In discus,
Lydia Hill and
Piper Eby made the SDSU top-10 all-time list at ninth and tenth, respectively. Hill hit a mark of 135-03 (41.24m) to finish third, while Eby placed fourth with a throw of 134-11 (41.14m).
In the women's weight throw,
Jalyn Shepherd claimed bronze with a throw of 58-08.75 (17.90m), while
Josie Curry hit a mark of 55-08.50 (16.98m) to finish in the top five.
On the track,
Brandon Kampsen finished runner-up in the mile with a time of 4:01.58. Kampsen's new personal record earned him a spot as the second-best performer in program history behind Head Coach
Rod DeHaven's program record of 4:00.95.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team posted the fourth-best performance in program history to round out the night. The team, consisting of
Jenna Johnson,
Erika Kuntz,
Reese Luze and
Vivian Dalton, crossed the line at 3:46.51 to take runner-up.
Jaden Peters won the pole vault competition by clearing 15-11.75 (4.87m).
Ryan Karajanis cleared 15-11.75 as well to finish third and become the sixth-best performer in program history.
In the triple jump competition,
Ty Nelson finished runner-up with a mark of 48-04.75 (14.75m),
Kincade Lehman jumped 47-10.50 (14.59m) to place third and make the SDSU top 10 all-time list, while
Wyatt Melcher placed fourth with a mark of 46-08.75 (14.24m).
Griffin Fischer took bronze in the 200-meter with a time of 21.81 to become the eighth-best performer in program history.
Brady Wallace competed in the 60-meter hurdle competition, where he finished third with a time of 8.21.
Aiden Voss and
Cael Woods competed as well. Voss took fifth with a time of 8.65, while Woods finished seventh at 8.82.
Both
Johanna Pihl and
Eleni Lovgren finished fourth in their respective events. Pihl competed in the long jump, where she posted a mark of 18-09.25 (5.72m) to become the eighth-best performer in program history, while Lovgren completed the 800-meter race at 2:12.19 to take eighth on the SDSU top 10 all-time list.
Gunnar Gunderson and
Jake Werner progressed to the 60-meter finals, where the pair finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Gunderson clocked a time of 6.82, while Werner finished at 6.97.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits head to a pair of Power Conference meets next weekend. Half of the team will compete at Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 6, while the remainder heads to Nebraska for a two-day meet, beginning Friday and ending Saturday, Feb. 7.
