AMES, IOWA —Brandon Kampsen claims the South Dakota State 800-meter program record at the Iowa State Classic Friday evening.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN "It was a very productive day here at Iowa State. Getting a school record and multiple top tens is an indication of a good day. It wasn't perfect, you know, but we're happy with the outcome."
Kampsen finished fifth overall with a time of 1:49.80, besting Jake Schneller's previous Jackrabbit record of 1:49.82, set in 2012.
Cody Larson won the mile race with a time of 4:01.58 to become the third-fastest performer in program history. Will Lohr also raced, finishing in 4:06.45 to place in the top five.
On the women's side, Meghan Ford and Emma Gonzalez finished first and second, respectively. Ford finished in 4:50.46 to become the fifth-fastest performer in program history, while Gonzalez clocked 4:53.92 to rank eighth-best in SDSU history.
For sprints, Jenna Johnson won the 400-meter competition with a time of 55.53. Erika Kuntz raced as well, placing in the top five with a time of 55.84 to become the fourth-best performer in program history.
Hannah Spoden made her way onto the SDSU top 10 list in the 800-meter race. Spoden clocked a time of 2:12.28 to place sixth in the event and become the ninth-fastest performer.
Jalyn Shepherd threw a new personal record in the weight throw to finish in the top five. Shepherd posted a mark of 59-09.75 (18.23m) to become the eighth-best performer in program history. Lydia Hill competed as well, finishing seventh with a mark of 56-06.50 (17.23m).
Kelsey Schmidt finished the 3000-meter with a time of 10:00.04 to place fourth in the event. Nicole Swanson finished shortly after in sixth at 10:00.63
Ryan Hackbart and Sam Ruid placed seventh and ninth, respectively. Hackbart threw 58-08.75 (17.90m), while Ruid posted a mark of 53-05.75 (16.30m).
