IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jenna Currier became South Dakota State's first individual medalist of the 2026 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly to open action Friday night, then helped close the evening as part of the Jackrabbits' third-place 400 medley relay.
A senior from Denison, Iowa, Currier's silver-medal performance in the 100 butterfly was achieved in record-setting fashion. She clocked a time of 54.83 seconds to better the standard she set in November at the Tommie Invitational by .39 seconds.
Denver's Julia Saxman cruised to the event title in 52.86 seconds.
The Jackrabbits' Sara Juez and Isabella Gnewuch both competed in the B final of the 100 butterfly and tied for 11th place with identical times of 57.45 seconds.
Currier swam the butterfly leg of SDSU's 400 medley relay, which earned a bronze medal to conclude a productive Day 3 of the championships for the Jackrabbits. Lily Esmas (backstroke), Hannah Miller (breaststroke) and Gigi Hioki (freestyle) teamed with Currier for a time of 3 minutes, 45.81 seconds.
Miller and Hioki also qualified for individual A finals of their own during Friday competition. Miller turned in a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.87 that now ranks fourth all-time in program history, while Hioki swam her way to a fifth-place showing in the 200 freestyle. Aubrey Douds placed 14th in the 200 freestyle, 1:54.70.
Also in the 100 breaststroke, senior Marissa Branham posted the seventh-best mark by a Jackrabbit in event with a time of 1:03.69 in the morning prelims to also qualify for the A final. In the evening session, Branham placed eighth in 1:03.88, and freshman Jessalyn Carpenter took 12th in 1:04.97.
Esmas, meanwhile, was one of two Jackrabbits to compete in the 100 backstroke B final. Her 10th-place time of 56.62 seconds in the final now stands as the ninth-fastest mark on the SDSU career charts.
Lucia Lopez placed 12th in the 100 backstroke, 56.74 seconds.
Hailey Creary turned in the second-fastest time in Jackrabbit history in the 400 individual medley final to place fifth overall. Creary's time of 4:25.32 Friday night was more than eight seconds faster than her preliminary time and five-plus seconds better than her previous career best established in November at the Tommie Invitational.
Four other Jackrabbits qualified for the B final of the 400 IM and were led by Emma Ingalls in 10th place, 4:31.22. Kailee Crane (4:33.28), Annabelle MacAdams (4:34.24) and Poppy Mead (4:34.40) claimed spots 12 through 14.
SDSU moved past St. Thomas for fourth place in the team standings heading into Saturday's finale. Preliminary events start at 10 a.m. at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, with the finals session starting at 5:30 p.m.
