MEN FINISH THIRD, WOMEN FIFTH
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — South Dakota State posts nine podium finishes at the Summit League Indoor Championships, assisting the men's team to a third-place finish with 134.5 points, and the women's team to a fifth-place finish with 72 points, on Saturday evening.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN "The weekend wasn't exactly what we wanted, but I think we gave a pretty gritty performance, given the athletes we were able to bring up to Grand Forks. We're able to walk out of here with a couple of school records and several people who made All-Summit League. I'm very proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff who made this weekend possible."
Brandon Kampsen had a spectacular showing in the mile and 800-meter finals. Kampsen clocked 4:06.04 to take runner-up in the mile, before besting his own 800-meter program record at 1:49.11 to take silver. Will Lohr competed alongside Kampsen in the mile, finishing fourth at 4:06.71, less than a second away from the third-place finisher's time of 4:06.60.
After missing bronze by less than a second in the mile and 3000-meter races, Lohr finally claimed a spot on the podium in the 5000-meter race alongside teammate Cody Larson. Larson took silver in the event with a time of 14:01.56, while Lohr earned bronze after running 14:16.14 to become the seventh-best performer in program history.
The women's 4X400-meter team had a phenomenal performance to end the conference meet. The team, consisting of Story Rasby, Jenna Johnson, Maggie Madsen and Erika Kuntz, clocked a time of 3:43.05 to tie the Jackrabbit program record and take bronze in the event.
Ryan Benson rounded out a spectacular heptathlon performance with 5169 points to earn bronze and become the third-best performer in program history. On his way to bronze, Benson posted his fifth personal record of the weekend in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.34.
Elliana Harris finished an amazing season with a new personal best in the 200-meter dash. Harris clocked a time of 23.95 to claim bronze and become the second-best performer in program history. Harris is the second athlete in SDSU history to run under 24 seconds, with program record holder Rich-Ann Archer being the only other Jackrabbit to do so. Archer's record is set at 23.93, only 0.02 milliseconds ahead of Harris' time this evening. Earlier in the meet, Harris competed in the 60-meter dash, where she tied her personal best time of 7.55 to take fifth in the finals.
Ty Nelson and Griffin Fischer medaled in their respective events in their first collegiate seasons. Nelson leaped 48-07.50 (14.82m) to take third in triple jump, while Fischer claimed bronze in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.56 to become the fifth-fastest performer in program history.
The men's distance medley relay was honored at the conclusion of track events Saturday evening due to the results of the contest being challenged late Friday evening. The challenge resulted in the University of North Dakota's relay team being disqualified, bumping the Jackrabbit DMR team up to second place. The team, consisting of Sean Murphy, Cael Woods, Joe Dustin and Cade Sanvik, posted a time of 9:53.98, the second-best in program history.
On top of her 4X400-meter program record, Kuntz also posted a personal best in the 400-meter finals. Kuntz crossed the line at 55.30 to finish fifth overall and become the third-best performer in program history. Jenna Johnson competed alongside her, taking seventh with a time of 55.45.
