South Dakota State welcomes St. Thomas to First Bank & Trust Arena on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The matchup is the second between the two sides this year and leads into the second half of the Jacks' Summit League schedule.
The Jacks and Tommies met on Jan. 22 in St. Thomas' Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. SDSU had a nine-point lead in the first half, as well as a 58-50 advantage at the 11:14 mark of the second half. SDSU led for over 21 minutes of the contest and sat ahead 68-67 with under three minutes to play, but were unable to make enough plays late in a 74-69 defeat. The matchup featured 16 lead changes and eight tie scores.
The Jackrabbits were led in that contest by
Joe Sayler who finished with a game-high 24 points. He was followed in double digits by
Matthew Mors (12) and
Damon Wilkinson (10). Across eight Summit League contests he's scored double digits in seven and scored over 20 points in four games.
Sayler, along with
Jaden Jackson, scored 24 points apiece in SDSU's last time out. This past Saturday saw the Jackrabbits beat Oral Roberts, 95-72, inside First Bank & Trust Arena. That matchup saw the Jacks produce their most field goals made (38), and top 3-point field goal percentage (57.1%), in a game this season (38).Â
The Jackrabbits have four players score double digits in league play including Sayler (18.4),
Damon Wilkinson (15.1), Jackson (12.1) and
Kalen Garry (11.1). Wilkinson is SDSU's leader in rebounding (7.6) and Garry averages 4.5 assists.
Wednesday's meeting features a matchup of the league's best in field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense. The Tommies rank atop the Summit shooting 52% from the field, while the Jackrabbits pace the conference on the defensive side allowing foes to shoot 42.2%.
St. Thomas enters the matchup with an 18-6 overall record and 7-2 mark in league play. The Tommies average a conference-high 85.8 points in league action. Averaging double digits includes Nick Janowski (20.9), Nolan Minessale (15.1), Carter Bjerke (12.0) and Isaiah Johnson-Arigu (11.2). In the two sides' first meeting, Janowski and Bjerke each had 21 points for the Tommies.Â
