BROOKINGS, S.D. – Timely hitting and a strong pitching performance carried South Dakota State softball to an 8-0 victory in five innings over North Dakota on Sunday, March 29, at Jerald T. Moriarty Field.Â
Â
SDSU got out to a 1-0 lead in the first as an
Amanda Vacanti RBI double plated
Bria Riebel.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits added another three runs to their tally in the third. Riebel scored again on a UND fielding error, then a two-run single hit by
Abby Gentry pushed the SDSU advantage to 4-0.Â
Â
Akayla Barnard got the start in the circle for the Jackrabbits. She produced a stellar effort, not allowing a hit in her first 4 1/3 innings of work. She allowed just one baserunner via walk during that stretch.Â
Â
Both teams went down in order in the fourth before heading to the fifth. Barnard ran into her first bit of trouble in the top of the frame. The Fighting Hawks produced back-to-back singles with one out to place runners on second and third. Barnard got a groundout to get the second out of the inning, then a fly out to right field to close out the inning with no damage given up.Â
Â
South Dakota State closed out a second consecutive run-rule win in the bottom of the fifth.Â
Â
Emma Vike walked to lead the inning off and
Bria Riebel brought her around on a two-run home run over the center-field fence. Vacanti and Barnard hit consecutive singles to put two runners on base for the Jacks. With one out,
Alli Boyle came in to hit and roped a 2-2 pitch to the left-center field wall. She'd end up at second with a double, while driving in two runs in the process, to end the game by an 8-0 score.Â
