BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State produced a dominating second-half effort to overcome North Dakota for a 2-1 Summit League victory on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Fishback Soccer Park.

The Fighting Hawks struck first on a waterlogged surface following a near-week's worth of rain. A deep pass from UND's Charlie Basinet found teammate Hunter Borgel who caught up to the ball and raced past the SDSU defense. Borgel worked her way around a charging Jackrabbit goalkeeper in Mallorie Benhart and finessed a right-footed boot from just inside the box to put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 14th minute.

North Dakota held on to that tally over the course of the opening 45 minutes. SDSU held possession of the ball for two-thirds of the first half, but couldn't muster an edge on its attacking opportunities. The two sides went into halftime with five shots apiece.

South Dakota State found its equalizer in the 60th minute.

Sophomore midfielder MaKynlie Cade made a move past a North Dakota defender and possessed the ball on her left foot dribbling towards the middle of the field. She fired a shot past a diving North Dakota keeper in Thale Ruether that found net just inside the left post to tie the score at 1-1.

The Jackrabbits continued to be aggressive on the attack and they found an opportunity in the 82nd minute. SDSU's Ellie Gusman dribbled the box into the box and was pulled down by a Fighting Hawk. The North Dakota defender in Bailee Zentner was given a red card and provided South Dakota State a penalty kick.

Junior Mia Bosch came up to line up for the attempt. Her initial strike was saved, but the ball deflected right back to Bosch. The SDSU midfielder swiftly booted the rebound into the goal to give the Jackrabbits a 2-1 edge.

South Dakota State battled to keep North Dakota away from the net for the remaining eight minutes of regulation. The Fighting Hawks were able to get one corner kick chance an ensuing header in the 85th minute, but SDSU prevented the visiting side from a solid chance to equalize the rest of the match.

The Jackrabbits improved to 6-2-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Summit League play. North Dakota fell to 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.

SDSU outshot UND by a 19-7 margin. Bosch and Cade each led the Jackrabbits with four shots each. Adrianne Agbayani, Jenna Maloy and Lauren Eckerle followed with two apiece. Eckerle and Hannah Langstaff each played the full 90 minutes for SDSU. Maloy followed with 81 minutes on the pitch while Stella Braddock joined the SDSU back row early in the first half and eventually competed for 71 minutes on the pitch. Benhart finished the game with two saves.

NOTES

South Dakota State is now 16-3-2 all-time against North Dakota. The Jackrabbits improved their unbeaten streak to 15 games against the Fighting Hawks.
The Jackrabbits sit atop Pod A in The Summit League with four points. SDSU has matching 1-0-1 records in The Summit League through two matches alongside Oral Roberts and Kansas City.
Bosch now has a team-high 11 points behind her third goal of the season. Cade's goal was the first of the season.
