Martin Hanson returns for his third year as the SDSU equestrian barn manger, where manages the day-to-day operations of the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center and the 150 acres of land it sits on, as well as the care and welfare of South Dakota State's stable of more than 40 horses. In addition to his daily duties, Hanson maintains and supervises a staff of 10-15 student employees and aids in the design and implementation of capital improvements for the facility
Born and raised in Elk Point, S.D., Hanson graduated from South Dakota State University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science.
Later that same Year, Hanson went to work for the United States Department of Agriculture in Bellingham, Wash., primarily with the Veterinary Services, specializing in disease education and surveillance. While working with the USDA, Hanson assisted U.S. Customs and Border Protection with import/export inspections of animals and equipment crossing the border from Canada.
While working on the U.S./Canadian border, Hanson trained with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security for emergency agricultural terrorism response and preparedness, he also trained and worked with the Department of the Interior as an inspector for the Bureau of Land Management, Wild Horse and Burro Program.
Hanson returned home to South Dakota in 2006 to work as a veterinary assistant at the Dakota Large Animal Clinic in Harrisburg, S.D., before joining the SDSU staff full time in January 2008.
