Alex Muntefering joined the Jackrabbit track & field and cross country staff in August 2022 and serves as an assistant coach working with the middle and long-distance runners.
Â
Muntefering, who also served as a graduate assistant coach for SDSU from 2014-2016, returns to Brookings after a successful stint at Texas State University (2016-2019) and two years coaching distance runners outside of the collegiate ranks since 2020.
Â
While as an assistant coach at Texas State, Muntefering oversaw the distance program and led the Bobcats to unprecedented heights. In 2017, the women’s cross country team captured their first ever Sun Belt Conference team title, while the men’s team had their highest ever team finish at the NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Championships (5th place).
Â
In 2018, Muntefering coached the first woman to win an individual cross country title at Texas State in 24 years and led the women’s cross country team to a program best 3rd place finish at the South Central Region Championship meet. On the track, Muntefering’s middle and long-distance runners scored significant points that helped to win six more Sun Belt Conference team championships between 2017 to 2019, including Devina Schneider, the high point scorer at the 2017 Sun Belt Conference outdoor meet.
Â
While a graduate assistant at South Dakota State, Muntefering worked alongside Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Rod DeHaven, assisting with the coaching of the distance program. The 2015 cross country campaign saw two Jackrabbits, Trent Lusignan and Joel Reichow, earn NCAA Division I All-American accolades.
Â
In high school, Muntefering was named South Dakota’s 2008 Gatorade Runner of the Year in cross county and 2009 Athlete of the Year in track and field. He parlayed his success to being named to the All-Big 12 Conference Indoor Track Team twice at the University of Oklahoma.
Â
After transferring to Colorado State, Muntefering was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference honoree in both cross county and indoor track. As a senior in 2013, he helped lead the Rams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time in nine years. He also earned the Big 12 and Mountain West Scholar Athlete honor all four years.
Â
Muntefering graduated from Colorado State in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science and from South Dakota State in 2016 with a master’s degree in sport and recreation studies.
Â
Muntefering, a native of Parkston, SD, is married to Chloe (née Phillips), a standout middle-distance runner at Mississippi State (2009-2013) and Colorado State (2013-2014).
