Clay Carlson joined head coach Damion Hahn's staff in 2024 as an assistant coach for the Jackrabbit Wrestling program. Carlson rejoined a program where he wrestled for six years from 2018-19 to 2023-24.Â
In his first year on the staff, the Jackrabbits went 14-4 in duals and 6-2 in Big 12 Conference Duals. The Jacks finished third at the Big 12 Championships and sent a program record nine wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament, coming away with one All-American in Cade DeVos (6th at 174 pounds). Carlson's impact was felt at the lower weights as SDSU had their 125, 133, and 141 pounders qualify for the tournament, in Tanner Jordan, Derrick Cardinal, and Carlson's 141 pound replacement Julian Tagg.
As a collegiate wrestler, Carlson is sixth all-time for victories at South Dakota State with 116 wins. During the 2022-23 season, Carlson became the 15th wrestler in program history to reach the 100-win mark.
A native of Wilmar, Minnesota, Carlson was a four-time NCAA Qualifier and a two-time All-American at 141 pounds for the Jackrabbits. Carlson was a vital part of the Jackrabbits squad that placed third at the Big 12 Championships, sending a program-record-tying eight wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24. Carlson was also a five-time Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling First-Team and a two-time Big 12 Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year.Â
He joins Damion Hahn's staff for the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach alongside Cam Simaz and Cody Caldwell.
