Dr. Verle Valentine has over 20 years’ experience as a sports medicine physician, including 11 years as a team physician for SDSU. He is a SDSU graduate and former student-athlete, playing basketball and running track and field. Dr. Valentine was also a student-athletic trainer and a graduate assistant athletic trainer during his time as a student at SDSU.
Valentine is a board certified sports medicine physician in Sioux Falls at Sanford Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. He serves as Co-Medical Director for the Sanford Sports Science Institute and is an Assistant Professor at the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. He also serves as the Director of the Sports Concussion Program at Sanford Health, and the Assistant Medical Director for the Sanford Sports Medicine Outreach programs.
Valentine has a profound interest in health, wellness, and injury prevention. His extensive background is supported by his teaching, research, publications, and ongoing medical practice. His training includes a medical degree from the University of South Dakota, a residency in Family Medicine from Michigan State University, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine from the Cleveland Clinic.
Valentine has special interests in child and adolescent athletic injuries, running injuries, musculoskeletal ultrasound, regenerative medicine, and sports-related concussions.
Valentine is a former assistant team physician for Michigan State University, the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA), the Cleveland Rockers (WNBA), the Cleveland Ballet as well as various other colleges and sports organizations over the course of his career. In addition to SDSU, he currently serves as a team physician for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA-G League, Brandon Valley High School and Sioux Falls Christian High School.
Valentine recently served two terms on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, chairing many committees. He currently serves as a Commissioner for the South Dakota Athletic Commission, is a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the National Federation of State High School Associations, and is a member of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
Valentine has been designated as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Dr. Valentine is also certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) as a Clinical Densitometrist.
Valentine resides in Sioux Falls with his wife, Carrie, and teenage daughter, Lexi.
