BROOKINGS, SD - Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne outscored South Dakota State 19-3 over the final 11 minutes as the Mastodons defeated the Jackrabbits 58-38 in non-conference men’s basketball Monday night at Frost Arena.

After trailing 27-19 at halftime and falling behind 39-29 following a three-pointer by DeWitt Scott, the Jacks rallied to close within 39-35 when Eric Heien scored on a layup following a steal by Jose Frias.

IPFW missed three of four free throw opportunities before things really began to unravel for the Jacks. First Scott hit another three, then SDSU’s Matt Cadwell was called for an intentional foul leading to two free throws by D.J. Posley followed by another three by Scott, making it 48-35.

SDSU’s only points in the closing 11 minutes came on a free throw by Ben Beran and a basket by Cadwell. SDSU was scoreless over the final 6:39.

IPFW, now 7-15 for the season, hit 10-of-22 three-point shots and was led by Scott with 16 points. Justin Hawkins and D.J. Posley added 12 each.

Beran led the Jacks with 14 points while Cadwell had 12 points and a team high eight rebounds.

IPFW, which plays at Northwestern Saturday, shot 42.3 per cent from the field, 22-of-52, while SDSU shot 36.4 per cent, 16-of-44 including a 7-for-21 effort, 33 per cent, in the second half. SDSU was 0-for-12 on three point attempts.

SDSU had a 34-32 rebounding advantage, but the Jacks had 20 turnovers, six more than IPFW.

SDSU, now 6-16, will host Texas-Pan American in the Pork Classic Saturday.
