BROOKLYN, N.Y. ? The South Dakota State University volleyball team dropped its final two matches Saturday at the Blackbird Holiday Inn Express Challenge.
The Jackrabbits, 13-7 overall, fell to Virginia Commonwealth in the opener, before being swept by Long Island (N.Y.) later in the day.
Virginia Commonwealth 3, SDSU 1
Kristina Martin turned in a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs, but South Dakota State fell to Virginia Commonwealth 30-23, 30-20, 26-30, 30-28 Saturday in Brooklyn.
Martin led the SDSU offensive attack with 17 kills and a .279 hitting percentage (17 kills, 5 errors in 43 attacks), while Amy Anderson added 16 kills.
Virginia Commonwealth was led on offense by Ana Luiz De Borja, who recorded 19 kills on 42 attempts. The Rams had three players with more than 15 kills for the match and out-hit the Jacks .251 to .219.
Kristie Klusaw tallied 46 set assists, while VCU's Catherine Juson recorded 50 assists.
Defensively, SDSU tallied 11.0 team blocks, led by Amanda Polzin's seven block assists. Samantha Pearson notched a team-high 22 digs.
Long Island 3, SDSU 0
Minette Ridenour posted a double-double for the match, but Long Island (N.Y.) recorded a 32-30, 30-23, 30-26 sweep of SDSU in final round action at the Blackbird Holiday Inn Express Challenge.
Ridenour led the Jackrabbit offense with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Amy Anderson recorded 13 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. All-tournament selection Kristina Martin chipped in with 12 kills.
Martina Wagner led the Rams with 18 kills. Shalby Heggie collected 13 kills, while hitting .355 (13 kills, 2 errors in 31 attempts) for the match. Martina Racic added 12 kills.
Kristie Klusaw was credited with 44 assists and Samantha Pearson led all players with 21 digs.
SDSU, 13-7, returns to action Oct. 6 against Texas Pan-American. Start time is 7 p.m. in Edinburg, Texas.
