Tennis downs Colorado College, falls to SUU

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? The South Dakota State University women's tennis team picked up its first dual victory of the spring season Saturday afternoon, defeating Colorado College, 5-2, at the Air Force Invitational.

The Jackrabbits opened the match winning all three doubles contests, then used victories in four of the six singles matches to defeat the Tigers. SDSU reeled off wins at the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots as Jen Sondreal, Amy Albrecht, Caitlin Brannen and Carrie Jansen were victorious.

Sondreal, a junior from Huron, put the Jacks on the board by defeating Sally Bryant, 6-3, 6-4. Brannen followed by defeating Anh Lai, 6-2, 6-1.

After Albrecht upended Sarah Tolman, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 singles slot, the freshman Jansen closed out singles competition with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

In doubles action, Sondreal and Kristine Hagedorn teamed for an 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Kate Wylie and Brannen downed Bryant and Lai, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot. Jansen and Rachel Schmieding closed out the scoring for the Jacks by upending Tolman and Beth Richards, 8-3.

Against Southern Utah, the women dropped a 7-0 match to the Thunderbirds to close play in Colorado Springs.

In singles action, Hagedorn looked to put the Jacks on the board at the No. 1 singles slot, but fell to Lelia Kanuha, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Sondreal fell to Carmen Blanco, 6-3, 6-1, while Wylie dropped a 6-4, 6-0, match to Denna Jenson.

Overall, South Dakota State moved to 1-2 on the spring season and will next be in action at Northern Iowa on Feb. 16. Start for the match in Cedar Falls, Iowa, has yet to be decided on.
