CORVALLIS, Ore. ? South Dakota State played #15 Oregon State and Portland State for a second straight day Saturday, but this time in Corvallis, Oregon. Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits though, a different site did not mean a different outcome, as they lost 8-0 to the Beavers, and 4-3 to the Vikings.
Oregon State capitalized on four Jackrabbit miscues in the first game of the day, scoring just one earned run.
Kiley Schwedhelm got the only Jackrabbit hit of the game, a one-out single in the second, but she got thrown out trying to steal second base.
Brianne McGowan earned her second straight win over the Jacks, she pitch six innings, giving up the one hit while striking out five and walking one.
The loss sends SDSU back below the .500 mark with a 9-10 record heading into the second game of the day against Portland State.
Portland State beat SDSU on Friday 1-0 after Viking pitcher Mandy Hill broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with a solo homerun. Hill did the damage again on Saturday, staking PSU to a 3-0 lead in the first with a three-run home run over the left field fence.
SDSU started chipping away at the lead its half of the first. Samantha Heinzman hit a leadoff single and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch.
PSU starting pitcher Jessi Even then walked the next three batters to force the Jacks first run across and end her outing without recording an out.
That brought Hill back to the mound for a second straight day and she sat down the next three batters in order, ending the Jackrabbit threat.
The Jacks did strike again in the third though, Kiley Schwedhelm hit a one out single and advanced to second on a Steph Kuhl ground out. That brought up Jessica Vineyard, who poked an RBI double into left scoring Schwedhelm and getting the Jacks within a run at 3-2.
Brittany Postma hit a one-out triple in the fourth and scored the tying run on a Heinzman sacrifice bunt.
The Viking's pieced together three singles in the top of the fifth and pushed the go-ahead, and eventual game winning run across with two-outs to take a 4-3 lead.
Hill sat the Jacks down in order the next three inning on the way to her ninth win of the season and second straight over SDSU in as many days.
The Jacks fall to 9-11 with the loss while the Vikings improve to 11-14.
SDSU returns to action on Sunday at the Cascade Clash with a double-header against #16 Oregon. First pitch from Eugene, Oregon is slated for 11 a.m. PT (1 p.m. CT).
