SDSU falls in opener at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Ryan Bond homered twice as Indiana State defeated South Dakota State 6-2 in the first game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon in college baseball action.

South Dakota State dropped to 4-6 on the season. The Sycamores, playing their home opener, improved to 3-1. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Monday afternoon.

Bond led off the bottom of the first inning to give Indiana State an early 1-0 lead, then hit another solo home run off Jackrabbit starter Erik Bess to lead off the bottom of the third. The Sycamores took the lead for good later in the third as Brett Siegmund scored on a wild pitch.

SDSU had tied the game in the second inning on a Tony Martin bunt single that scored Nick Adams.

Indiana State tacked on single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 6-1 leads.

The Jackrabbits cut into the deficit in the eighth inning before their rally came up short. Martin doubled with one out and scored on pinch-hitter Tyson Fisher's single to center field. After Korby Mintken singled and Tim Hanigan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, ISU reliever Ada Lindsay struck out Jake Rogers to end the inning.

Both teams stranded 14 runners in the game.

The Sycamores out-hit SDSU 11-10. Martin, Mintken and Matt Zabel each had two hits for the Jackrabbits, while Dane Brumagin was 3-for-5 for Indiana State. Mintken topped 100 career hits in Sunday's game.

Ryan Hayes worked the first seven innings for Indiana State to improve to 2-0.

Bess suffered his first loss of the season as his record evened at 1-1.
