RAPID CITY ?
Cal Lewis hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and senior right-hander
Matt Bowman pitched another complete-game victory as South Dakota State opened a three-game baseball series with a 6-3 victory over Northern Colorado Friday afternoon at Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium.
The Jackrabbits improved to 18-14 overall, winning for the ninth time in 12 games. Northern Colorado dropped to 10-21.
SDSU started its West River trip on the right foot, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning.
Jake Rogers led off with a base hit, moved to second on a
Korby Mintken sacrifice bunt and scored on
Tyson Fisher's double off the glove of left fielder Nate Saylor. Fisher came around to score on
Nick Adams' single up the middle.
UNC tied the game in its next at-bat. Kevin Sandberg opened the inning with a double to center field and scored on a base hit by Grady Gorman. Adam Symons then doubled to the right-center gap to plate Gorman with the tying run.
The Bears took a momentary lead in the top of the sixth on John Ray's third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
The Jackrabbits responded by taking the lead for good on the first two pitches of the inning. Adams doubled to right center before Lewis, who struck out in his first two at-bats, drilled the first pitch he saw from Eric Maydew off the scoreboard in left center for his team-leading eighth round-tripper of the year.
Bowman, meanwhile, settled into a groove the rest of the way, retiring 10 of the last hitters he faced following the Ray homer. The Madera, Calif., native struck out eight and did not walk a batter as he improved to 5-2 on the season, recording his third complete game in his last four starts.
SDSU added two insurance runs in the eighth. Fisher led off the frame with an opposite-field triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adams. With two outs,
Craig Parry tripled the other way to left and came home on a solid single to right by
Tony Martin.
Fisher, Adams, Parry and Martin each tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits, who held a 12-7 advantage in hits column.
Maydew took the loss for UNC despite a solid effort in which he worked 7 2/3 innings. He struck out six and also did not issue a walk.
The middle game of the three-game series is set for 2 p.m. Mountain Time Saturday. An SDSU alumni picnic will precede the game in the stadium parking lot, starting at 12:30 p.m.
