MINNEAPOLIS ? Minnesota scored eight unearned runs in the fifth inning, downing South Dakota State 9-4 in baseball action Wednesday night at Siebert Field.
SDSU dropped to 20-15 overall, while Minnesota improved to 27-7 on the season, including a 19-4 mark at home.
The Jackrabbits grabbed the first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the second inning. With one out,
Craig Parry walked and moved to third on a double down the left-field line by
Tony Martin.
Matt Zabel produced the first run, plating Parry with a groundout.
Tim Hanigan then followed with a base hit to right to score Martin.
SDSU made it 4-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by
Jake Rogers, his eighth round-tripper of the season, scoring Hanigan ahead of him.
An error with one out in the fifth inning opened the floodgates for Minnesota, which sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive inning. Dan Lyons doubled in the first two runs off Jackrabbit starter
Kirby Morsching and Nate Hanson doubled in the go-ahead run off reliever
Kevin Morsching with a two-run double after Mike Mee's infield single drove in another run. Kyle Baran made it a 6-4 game with a run-scoring single and Bryan Jost drove in the final two runs with a base hit.
Jost was 3-for-4 to lead Minnesota's 11-hit attack.
The Golden Gophers added a run in the eighth inning against Jackrabbit reliever
Sam Pieczynski, one of six SDSU pitchers in the game.
SDSU threatened in the ninth, leaving the bases loaded as
Korby Mintken lined out to third base. Kyle Carr, who faced just the one batter, earned his fifth save of the season. The Jackrabbits stranded seven runners in the game.
Hanigan was 3-for-4, while Rogers added two hits in three trips to the plate as part of SDSU's 10 hits.
