FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? The South Dakota State University baseball team ran its record against fellow Division I independents to 11-2, sweeping a doubleheader from IPFW Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits, who improved to 22-15 overall, won the opener by a 13-11 count, before taking the nitecap, 11-4. IPFW dropped to 9-28.
In the opener, SDSU hit four home runs to win the slugfest.
Nick Adams opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.
IPFW scored an unearned run in the home half of the first and added four runs on three hits and two hit batters in the second inning.
The Jackrabbits came right back in the third inning, striking for six runs.
Tim Hanigan led off with a base hit and scored on
Tyson Fisher's second home run of the season.
Tony Martin and
Korby Mintken also delivered run-scoring hits in the inning.
IPFW regained the lead in the bottom of the third, touching Jackrabbit starter
Matt Bowman for five more runs to take a 10-8 lead. Nick Diem delivered the big blow, a two-run homer that broke an 8-all deadlock.
SDSU took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning.
Cal Lewis led off the inning with his team-leading 11th home run of the season and
Tony Martin followed two batters later with a two-run shot, his fourth home run of the year.
The Jackrabbits added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to seal the victory.
Despite his worst outing of the season, Bowman picked up his sixth win of the season as he lasted five-plus innings. The senior right-hander gave up 11 hits, but did not walk a batter in striking out four. Of the 11 runs he allowed, only five were earned.
Jake Angier relieved Bowman in the sixth inning and induced a double-play grounder with the tying run in scoring position.
Jacob Kougl pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out two, to earn his eighth save of the season.
Fisher was 3-for-4 to lead SDSU's 14-hit attack. Adams, Lewis, Martin and
Matt Zabel each had two hits for the Jackrabbits.
In Game 2,
Caleb Thielbar pitched a complete game and the Jackrabbits struck for seven runs in their last at-bat to pull out an 11-4 win.
Trailing 3-2 entering the sixth inning, SDSU took its first lead of the game, 4-3, on back-to-back home runs by
Craig Parry and Martin.
The Jackrabbits then broke the game open in the seventh inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Hanigan opened the inning with a walk and later scored on a base hit by Adams.
Jake Rogers later plated two runs with a base hit and Hanigan capped the scoring with a two-run triple.
Thielbar struck out eight and walked two as he won his sixth consecutive decision, improving to 6-2. The sophomore left-hander allowed seven hits in the complete-game victory.
IPFW starter Stacy Herrold suffered the loss after pitching six-plus innings. He walked five and struck out five.
Fisher and Hanigan each tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits.
The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
