Friday's scheduled doubleheader was reduced to one game due to cold and blustery conditions. The two teams will attempt to play a doubleheader Saturday, although start time has been pushed back an hour until 1 p.m.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning until SDSU broke through with three runs. Cal Lewis led off the inning with a walk and later moved up a base on a free pass issued to Matt Zabel. Jake Rogers then followed with a double down the right-field line to plate Lewis and advance Zabel to third. Zabel scored on a base hit by Korby Mintken and
The Jackrabbits added a run in the sixth inning on a swinging-bunt single by Tim Hanigan that scored Tony Martin.
NDSU appeared on the verge of tying the game in the top of the seventh. After a Bowman throwing error loaded the bases, Matt Mossey drove in Gavin Hofer and Cole Zimmerman with an opposite-field double. Billy Gazich scored on a groundout by Greg Plecki, but Mossey was thrown out at the plate on the same play.
SDSU, 13-12 overall, put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the home half of the second against the Bison bullpen. After a pair of walks and an error by pitcher Seth Foley loaded the bases, Craig Parry delivered the first run on a sacrifice fly and Nick Adams followed with a run-scoring single.
Bowman, a senior right-hander from
Sebastian Miles tallied two of NDSU's seven hits as the Bison fell to 3-16 on the season.
Jake Laber took the loss for the Bison, falling to 2-3 on the season. He issued six of the Bison pitching staff's eight walks, while striking out six. Matt Bowar struck out three in two innings of work.
SDSU's five hits came from five different players. The Jackrabbits stranded eight runners, while NDSU left seven on base.
