South Dakota State and Stephen F. Austin (Texas) battled to a draw in head-to-head competition, but the visiting Lumberjacks tallied a higher total team score in a Varsity Equestrian dual Saturday at the Swiftel Center Holding Barn.
With head-to-head competition tied at 8-all, SFA was declared the winner of the dual after compiling 996.5 points, compared to 984.5 by the Jackrabbits. The Lumberjacks held a 514-507 advantage in English competition and a 482.5-477.5 edge in the Western discipline. Each team's low individual score in each discipline was dropped in figuring the team point totals.
SDSU, which lost its season-opening dual, received two head-to-head victories from Abby Knobbe in the Western portion of the competition. Knobbe, a junior from Dodge, Neb., defeated Felicia Shartle of Stephen F. Austin, 72-69.5, in horsemanship, then claimed a 67-57.5 victory over Lydia Roof in reining. Knobbe's score in horsemanship was the top by a Jackrabbit rider, while Lacey Vernon's 73 led SDSU in reining.
In English competition, newcomer Leslie Sauter tallied the highest score in equitation over fences with a 73. Laura Hoff led the Jackrabbits in equitation on the flat with the top score of the day by an SDSU rider, 78.5, en route to a head-to-head victory over Cat Brennan.
SDSU returns to action Sept. 29 at home against Kansas State. Competition begins at 9 a.m. at Swiftel Center.
